DIY Poppy and Branch Trolls Halloween Costumes

If your home is filled with young kids and a Netflix account, chances are you too are watching Trolls an awful lot. It’s super colorful, has familiar characters and the soundtrack is pretty great too. (Hello Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick!) This year’s Halloween costume is inspired by this cheery movie! Check out the DIY Poppy and Branch Trolls Halloween Costumes I made for my 5 and 3 year old!

Yes, for those of you who are traditionalists, you will note that the Branch character voiced by Justin Timerberlake is, of course, a male.

I took creative liberties and created a female version of this grumpy guy to create Hailey’s Trolls Halloween Costume. Here’s Hailey and her attempt to look grumpy despite being a happy girl 99% of the time.

Poppy Trolls Halloween Costume Supplies:

Blue and green dresses
Felt (light blue, teal blue, green)
Pink Tulle
Pink Crochet Headband
Scissors (these are my favorite to cut felt)
Needle and Thread
Straight Pins
Small Rubber band
Velcro
Template (note: it looks different than in the photo above as I made adjustments to the file after shooting that!)
Chalk

To create Poppy’s dress, I Iaid the light blue felt on the bottom of the blue dress and used chalk to mimic the curve on the bottom. This created a 2.5 inch piece as the bottom hem.

I then cut the other light blue and teal felt shapes from the template and used straight pins to pin them onto the bottom of the dress.

This was then easy to tote around with me and sew whenever I had a few minutes. At gymnastics, in the car as a passenger, or next to the girls as they played. I love having a craft I can easily bring with me to get it done!

To create the iconic Trolls hairstyle, I used the same technique as I did to make Brielle’s tutu for her first Christmas photoshoot with tulle and a crochet headband. Cut pieces of tulle about 24 inches long then fold it in half. Insert the loop into one of the holes on the headband and insert the other ends of the tulle strip through the loop. Pull tight to secure to the headband.

Do this all the way around then pull all the tulle up to the top. Use a rubber band to secure the ends together in that famous Trolls hair shape.

To create Poppy’s headband, I cut a strip of green felt to fit the width around the head and sewed the blue felt flowers and green leaves on top. I also sewed a little piece of velcro on the ends so she could easily wear this over the pink crochet headband of Poppy’s hair.

Branch Trolls Halloween Costume Supplies:

Green dresses (Mine is from Primary in “Grass”)
Felt (light green, green)
Black Tulle
Black Crochet Headband
Scissors
Needle and Thread
Small Rubber band
Template

To create Branch’s outfit, I used my Primary green dress as a base and cut out green leaf shapes that I hand sewed on top in an overlapping pattern.

The hair was done the same way as shown above only with black tulle and a black crochet headband.

This duo is super excited to sport these Trolls Halloween costumes for Halloween and all the events leading up to it!

For Halloween night, Hailey has brown leggings for Branch’s “branchy” look and Brielle has pink ones to bring in Poppy’s famous pink!

Can I also just reiterate (for the 5th year now) how you should make time to do a Halloween costume photoshoot prior to the big day? These are always some of my favorite pics of the year as there’s no pressure on timing to catch the light and the talk of candy is no where in sight!
