I am so proud of myself as I created a quilted project for the first time! And since I love to create things for my home, I went with a patriotic red, white and blue theme using fat quarter fabric pieces and made this fun table runner for my dining room.

Quilted Patriotic Table Runner Supplies:
- Cotton Fabric
- Poly-Fil Low Loft Quilt Batting
- Sewing Machine
- Sewing clips or pins
- Rotary Cutter
- Iron

First cut your pieces into your desired quilt design. Since this was my first quilting project I just went with long rectangular pieces. I also don’t have a quilting ruler but I think it’s on my future buy list as it’s tough to get straight cuts with this ruler style! And hello, straight cuts is an important part of quilting!

Next, I clipped the right sides together of two side by side quilt pieces. I just went with an alternating red then blue pattern.

Another essential part of quilting is the iron! Set up an ironing station so you can go back and iron the pieces down after sewing together. I didn’t realize how much ironing was involved! I also did see the difference from just trying to hand fold it over vs really pressing it with the iron so just suck it up and set up that station.

Once sewing together all the quilting parts on the front. I cut a slightly larger piece of fabric for the back. I made sure it had an 1.5 around all four sides as I folded that up and used it as seam binding.

In order to actually put the parts together, I made my first quilt sandwich! This is where you put the backer piece with the right side facing out, then your quilt batting, then your top quilted piece with the right side also facing out. I chose this Poly-Fil Low-Loft Quilt Batting as it gives a lightweight feel to the piece but isn’t too fluffy. I also have come to really love the Poly-Fil brand so it’s so fun that it comes in basically “sheets” I can use as fillers for projects where I want some lift but don’t want it bulky.

Next, I used a lot of straight pieces to collect the fabric layers with the quilt batting so it would stay together on the sewing machine. I ran (somewhat) straight lines back over the borders of each quilted piece so help secure everything in place on this patriotic table runner.

Next I folded up the bottom layer once halfway then folded it again up over the quilted around and pinned it. I’m not too keen on how the corners look so this is something I’ll need to practice more on my next quilting project! Learn from my mistakes and research this more!

I took my time to sew the binding all the way around to finish my quilted piece!

Now I can use this patriotic table runner on my dining room table to setup a eating area for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July! This Poly-Fili Low-Loft bag was fit for a queen quilt so while I only used a piece of it, I still have plenty of crafting with it in my future!

Is this thing littered with uneven pieces, not straight sewn lines and plaid patterns that don’t line up? YES! But I’m still proud of taking a try at this craft type I’ve admired for so long!

I hope you were able to follow along and it inspired you to pull out your sewing machine and gift this quilted craft a try!
