Before you donate any clothes, look at them from the perspective of potential fabric use. See how to turn an upcycled work shirt into a patriotic USA fabric bunting to hang in your home for the summer.

While I’ve been a hand sewer for as long as I remember, I’m fairly new to the sewing machine experience. Just a few months ago I made my first quilt when making this patriotic table runner and was pleasantly surprised how successful I was at the first attempt, but also more surprised at how much ironing is necessary in quilting!

Now I’m ready to try another fabric based crafts with a little depth to it and crafted up this USA Fabric Bunting for the patriotic holiday season.

Fabric USA Bunting Supplies:
- Red, White and Blue Fabric (the blue is an upcycled work shirt!)
- USA Bunting template (grab it free here!)
- Low Loft Quilt Batting
- Tailor’s Chalk
- Bias Tape
- Sewing Clips or straight Pins
- Sewing Machine
- Fabric Scissors

First, grab your fabric, iron it and lay it with the right side down. In this case of this craft, I saved my husbands dress shirt he was donating and used it as my blue fabric base!

Next, print, cut out and trace the pennant template on the fabrics with Tailor’s Chalk. This chalk is perfectly thin to easily trace your templated shapes and comes in an assortment of light and dark colors so you can use it on different fabric crafts.

Lay out your Poly-Fil Low Loft Quilt batting and trace 5 of the bunting shapes. This will be used to help add some dimensions to the finishing bunting piece, without it being too heavy to be hung.

Lay two of the bunting shapes right side together and add the batting on top. Use clips to keep them all together.

Run this through the sewing machine to sew all but the top sides together. Trim the bottom corners before turning inside out. Use a wood dowel or pencil to make a sharp point.

Lay the letters or star shapes on top of the bunting shapes and pin down to secure.

Sew these shapes in place through all layers to create a quilted effect.

It’s now time to assemble your USA bunting design. Use bias tape along the top separating the pieces out a few inches.

Your patriotic USA Bunting decor is now finished and ready to hang. Add it to your mantles for the 4th of July or throughout the whole patriotic summer season.

This piece perfectly compliments the patriotic wall hanging I created last summer with Oly-Fun fabric.

Tag me if you end up using this free template to create your own patriotic piece for your home!
