Supplies:
- Green hoodie
- Felt – Blue, Yellow, Red, Orange, White, Black
- Hot Glue
- HeatnBond Iron On Adhesive
- Fabric Scissors
- Iron
- Chalk or water erase pen
- Dragon Hoodie Printable Template
- Flexible Wire (I used 18 gauge aluminum wire)
- Elastic
- Safety Pins
- Clips or pins (to hold felt in place)
Let’s start with the dragon hoodie. Cut out all the shapes on the dragon hoodie template. Cut the coordinating felt shapes as shown. Tip: pay attention to which shapes require more than one piece as noted on the template! The amount of spikes will be determined by your hoodie size and how you space them out.
Layer the pieces as shown and adhere together. Make sure to mirror the flames so they are going opposite directions. Also leave the bottoms of the spikes and the horns open slightly, about a ½ an inch so you can attach them properly in a later step.
Adhere the eyes and nostrils onto the hood. Use chalk to make marks for the horns.
Use scissors to cut the holes for the horns. Tip: if your hoodie is a double thickness like ours, only cut through the top layer.
Insert the horn into the hole and spread the bottoms open. Use hot glue to adhere these pieces in place.
Lay your spikes down the center of the hood and back of the hood. Use chalk to make marks then cut along these marks with fabric scissors.
Insert the spikes and spread the bottoms open. Use hot glue to adhere them in place.
Flip your hoodie over and cut a yellow oval shape to cover the front of the hoodie in the belly area. Make a cut for each of the pockets or cut it in half if you chose a zipper front!
Have the hoodie recipient wear the hoodie and cross their elbows in front of their face and mark this placement. Remove from this person then use hold glue to adhere the flames in place in a mirror effect.
When worn, it looks like they’re breathing this friendly fire!
Now let’s make the removable dragon wings. Lay your completed dragon hoodie on the green felt and freehand a wing shape using chalk, as shown.
Fold the felt in half with the fold on the right and cut out this shape to make one full set of wings.
Cut a hold in the center to allow one of the spikes to poke through, when worn.
Trace this full shape onto the green felt to create a duplicate piece.
Unwind wire in the shape shown on one of the wing pieces, using clips or pins to hold it in place.
Cut and adhere Heat n Bond to the back of the other wing shape.
Layer the wing with the Heat n Bond over the wing with the wire. Remove the clips from the lower level and use them to hold this sandwiched wing in place.
Follow the instructions for the Heat n Bond to adhere these two pieces of felt together. The wire is now sandwiched inside these two wing shapes.
If desired, cut blue felt shapes to add on top of the wing for a little additional color.
Use safety pins to attach elastic strips on the inside of the wings. This will allow the user to easily strap the wings on to wear. This is a no sew tutorial but you could certainly sew these elastic pieces on for more security!
This is what these dragon wings look like when worn! Tip: make sure to insert the spike through the hole!
To create the tail, cut out all the shapes on the dragon tail template. Trace each shape onto the coordinating felt color as listed on the template.
Cut three slits on one of the tail pieces where you will insert the spikes.
Adhere the three spike pieces together, leaving the bottom ½ an inch open and not glued together.
Insert the spike into the hole on the tail shape and spread open the bottoms. Use hot glue to adhere in place. Repeat for all three spikes. Apply Heat n Bond to the other green tail piece and adhere to one with the spikes.
Use safety pins to attach this tail to your dragon hoodie. Now your wings and tail accessories are complete!
Your dragon hoodie, complete with a fire breathing surprise, is now a winged and fully spiked costume ready to put fear into passersby! Create this Dragon Halloween costume now and get ready for trick or treating this October!
