Last year was my first attending and creating a trunk for our school’s trunk or treat and my girls wanted to repeat that fun night with another creative car this year. As a creative crafter, I knew we could come up with something that uses little outside resources and we decided to play off the Crazy Cat Lady themed I had already started on this season.

Just a few weeks back I created this DIY Crazy Cat Lady costume featuring Poly-Fil Polyester Fiber Fill in the plush kitties and I knew I could use more household creations to deck out our trunk in this same theme.

First, find cardboard. Luckily my husband saves large “good cardboard” pieces if we ever have large box shipments. He often uses these for household projects, like painting, and I sometimes use them for cardboard crafting!

Next I cut some pieces to fit within the car trunk and began painting them to look like a bunch of cats.

Cats have such different personalities so it was fun to paint these cats with an assortment of expressions and looks with some simple fine lines.

What would cats be without toys? I also cut some up cardboard pieces in cat toy shapes and one big sign. This sign related to one key element to our trunk or treat.

The sandbox! YUP we set up my kids’ sandbox with some white sand, grabbed some clean litter scoopers from the dollar store and the sign encouraged kids to scoop for their treat.

The kids got a KICK out of this fun interactive station and we could tell that most either didn’t have cats or never helped to clean their litter box so it was truly an educational event. LOL

Us moms grabbed our robes and made DIY creations of our versions of crazy cat ladies. We were warm and cozy in our plush robes and pjs pants covered in cats and kids loved getting down in the sand to retrieve their treats.
