The Kentucky Derby is the most watched horse race in the USA and one that makes for a great party theme! If you’re throwing a Kentucky Derby party and encourage guests to don their derby hats and bowties, delivery fun costume contest trophies and prizes to award friends that go all in on your theme!
This year, one of my besties turned 40 and was celebrated with a “Run for the Rose” (the wine) Kentucky Derby themed party. Since guests were encouraged to dress the part with derby hats and bow ties, I, and my fellow crafty friend Tara, put together cute DIY Costume Contest Trophies in 6 categories to pair with adult beverage prizes.
Kentucky Derby DIY Costume Contest Trophies Supplies:
- Plastic Trophy base
- White Spray Paint
- Styrofoam
- Mini plastic horse figurines
- Pink Cardstock
- Green moss
- Kentucky Derby Trophy SVG cut file (Get it for free!)
- Black Adhesive Vinyl
- Cricut Maker
- Hot Glue Gun
I actually found these plastic trophies at Target in the after Easter sale but have seen similar ones at Party City. I shaped pieces of Styrofoam to fit within the top cup and attached plastic horses on top with hot glue.
I sprayed this insert piece with white spray paint and once dry, glued it into the trophy base.
Upload the Kentucky Derby Trophy SVG cut file in Cricut Design space and cut the rolled flowers on pink cardstock. Cut the phrases on black adhesive vinyl.
Use the tweezers to grab the edge of the paper flower. Roll it tightly towards the center.
Let it unroll slightly to the size you desire. Flip it over and add hot glue in the center then press the little flap down to secure.
Weed the trophy phrases and use transfer tape to attach it onto the trophy base.
To finish these DIY Costume Contest Trophies, glue the rolled flower onto the front of the trophy to play off the rose theme and glue the green moss under the horse to cover the styrofoam.
Your adorable Kentucky Derby DIY Costume Contest Trophies are now complete and ready to gift to the best dressed at your Kentucky Derby party! Gift these as is or pair them with an adult beverage, candy or treats to make it a bigger prize.
On party day display the trophies near the bar so friends can see what categories they’re up against!
