I’ve always admired those fabric letter banners that spell at names in nurseries or seasonal designs and wanted to give it a try! The fall season seemed like a great time to give this new-to-me sewing project a try so please check out my first alphabet banner of the word “Thankful”.

First is my least favorite step of any sewing project (and honestly maybe why I wasn’t too eager to jump into this sewing journey) to iron your fabric. Luckily I at least got to look at some beautiful fabric patterns for this banner!

Amy Latta is a creator, artist and fabric designer of this beautiful collection named Harvest Home released through Andover fabrics. I’ve “known” Amy for YEARS, since I was working for a kids crafting company way before I was a mom and she was literally One Artsy Momma inspiring creative moms with her kids crafts with her oldest. This beautiful line features rich colors and prints of the season with Amy’s signature handwriting and doodling styles. Amy generously gifted me a few half yards of the Happy Harvest Mocha, Harvest Berries Cream and Cozy Plaid Ochre that fit perfectly in this season of thanks.

After ironing, I cut out the template for my “THANKFUL” phrase using my SVG cut file on my Cricut machine. If you’re not a Cricut crafter, I also have this template as a pdf printable file you can hand cut with scissors.

Lay your template onto a piece of fabric and trace the shape on a wide rectangular shape around it. You’ll need this extra width to catch on your sewing machine, but also to cut a pinking sheared edge. Cut
Flip the rectangle over and cut a second piece of fabric. Aka two pieces facing out.
Roll out your Low Loft Poly-Fil Quilt Batting and cut a similar rectangular piece. This quilt batting will give a little fluff and dimension to your fabric banner so it doesn’t lay limp on your mantle. I’ve been using my large queen sized bag for lots of projects now so know that you can use a bigger roll for all things crafty!
Additionally cut small rectangles of felt that are approximately 2.5 x 1 inch. These will be turn into hangers for the banner.
Let’s prepare a yummy quilt sandwich. Lay on pieces of fabric face down, put the quilt batting on top, then lay the other fabric on top, face up. Fold your felt hanger in half and pin everything together. Tip: the felt hanger should be positioning along a top line of the letter. You might need 2 for certain letters, like the “N” or “H”, for example.

Repeat for the additional letters and two pie shapes before running each through the sewing machine, tracing the letter template.

Use pinking shears to cut a decorative edge along the outside of your letter shapes, careful not to cut the felt hangers.

Dress up the two pie shapes using an extra piece of light brought felt cut with the pinky shears and sewn on the top in a ruffled pattern. Sew a white pom pom on the center acting like a dollop of whipped cream.

Once you complete all your letters, thread them in order on a long piece of ribbon you’ll use to hang you fabric banner.

Your “THANKFUL” Fabric Banner is now ready to be displayed in your home this November or any season you feel grateful. The warm colors of this fabric line, along with the fluffy Poly-Fil quilt batting filling in the middle, gives if the perfect warmth and texture to your living room space.
