How to Make A Cake Topper With Your Cricut

in Birthday, Celebrations

The amount of things you can make with your Cricut is endless but one of my favorite ways to make a birthday a little more special is with a personalized cake topper! Learn how to use Cricut Design Space and your Cricut machine to make a cake topper for someone’s special day!

Whether you grab a cake from the grocery store or bake your own, you can dress up a birthday cake with a custom cake topper made with your Cricut machine! I PROMISE you it’s much easier than you think! I’ve stepped it all out for you below so you’ll be quickly on your way to custom party decor.

What you need to make a cake topper:

  • Cricut Machine (I used my Cricut Maker but you could also use your Explore Air!)
  • Cricut Design Space software (FREE!)
  • Cricut Basic Tools (the spatula is key for this project!)
  • Cricut Brayer
  • Thicker Weight Cardstock or Cricut Poster Board
  • Lollipop stick(s)
  • Hot Glue Gun

First you’ll need to design your cake topper in Cricut’s free software called Cricut Design Space (CDS). Type the words you want to create for your cake topper, each as their own text group. In the cake of this cake topper I did “Happy”, “birthday”, “70” “th” “Gwen”.

Next, play around with your fonts, placements, and sizes. Tip: To create a successful cake topper, you’ll need to make sure each character is touching another character so it has some support. I think is best with at least some script fonts since they naturally connect to another character. The fonts you see above are called “rollcake” (script) and “Muro” (blocky font) You can find them both free for personal use on dafont.com.

In the case of the above, I wanted to scoot the “70” characters closer together so the numbers would touch. You can do this by selecting your text then going up to the top menu where it says “letter space” and lower the spacing until they are slightly overlapping. (Note: I didn’t catch it until assembly but the dot of my “i” isn’t touching anything and therefore was lost after cutting!)

For this cake topper, I decided to add a solid rectangle area at the bottom to help hold all the characters in place. On the left side menu, choose a rectangle from the “shapes” menu and resize it how you want. Tip: make sure there are 1-2 key points on the bottom of the design in which you’ll be able to easily adhere the lollipop sticks so you can place it in the cake. This is best achieved with straight letters, which is why I chose the blockier font on the bottom word.

Once you like the placement of all your characters, highlight everything, go to the bottom right menu and under the “combine” menu, choose “WELD”. This will weld, or connect, all the shapes together to make it one shape. If you realize things are not exactly as you want it in this step, undo and scoot things over to make to make it one shape. Again, I didn’t count for the dot of my i here and it gets lost!

Choose “make” on the top right. Tip: If you choose poster board like me, mirror your cut. The poster board has a white core inside which you can see when you cut it so mirroring it allowed for all the messiness to be on the back of the cake topper. You can see what I mean in a photo a few steps down.

Stick your cardstock or poster board on your sticky mat and roll the brayer on top. As I shared on this reel, I think the brayer is key to making great cuts as it helps the material adhere to the mat and get all air bubbles and wrinkles out.

Choose “poster board” as your material and send it to cut.

After the cut is complete, use the spatula to remove the cake topper from the sticky mat. This spatula helps limit any curving in the material and keep everything straight, a key element to the cake topper look!

Hopefully you see the difference on the photo above of the top left design that was cut regularly and the bottom right which used the mirror effect to hide all the white inner core cuts on the back.

Glue 1-2 lollipop sticks or cake pop sticks on the back of the design with hot glue.
