This year is the 9th year that I’ve done a DIY Halloween costume for Brielle! (PS Scroll below or check this instagram reel to see the costumes of years past) She, like many kids this past year loved the new Luca Disney movie that came out and when I shot out the idea of a Luca Halloween costume amongst other ideas, she picked Luca. I’m happy to say the concept of Luca being a boy never crossed her mind, just like last year when she was Pete the Cat! To her, it’s just a loved character that could make for a fun costume.

Supplies:

  • Green hoodie
  • Felt – Blue, lime green, yellow
  • Heat Transfer Vinyl – holographic, blue glitter
  • Needle and thread in several colors
  • Elastic
  • Stuffing
  • Blue belt
  • Green scales pants
  • Luca Costume Mask PDF Template (download it free here)
  • Luca Costume SVG file (download it free here)

Since Halloween can be chilly weather in our area, I decided based this costume on a hoodie base with some felt and heat transfer vinyl elements added on. If you didn’t already know, I kinda have a thing for DIY hoodie based costumes.

DIY Luca Halloween Costume | spotofteadesigns.com

To create the hoodie I first cut blue strips as shown that would fit over the hood part to create the Luca’s signature blue wave hair style.

I laid them on top and sewed them onto the hood from the underside.

They are flipped down when worn and give a little lifted look when she trick or treats. I also sewed on the green fins on the front of the hoodie, just like Luca has.

Next up came the vinyl placement. You can grab the scales and the hair accent piece svg cut files from the supply list above and add to the hoodie as shown.

The scales aren’t perfect (reminder: this is a homemade costume), but Brielle doesn’t mind that they don’t fully line up around the sleeves. The holographic vinyl really adds to the shimmery water quality that you see in the movie.

I decided to add an optional face mask (the old school kind that goes over your eyes, not your nose and mouth!). Brielle can’t wear this to school, but she can wear it on Halloween night.

To create it, I cut each piece out of my face mask template, cut the sample pieces from felt and sewed them together, as shown.

To create the tail I cut (2) pieces of green fabric in this tail shape, an additional blue piece as the fin on top and a separate oval piece that will go against their body when worn.

Pin together.

Sew it all together, adding stuff as you go. I also cut two slits on the oval piece to slide the belt through then attached to the tail.

I sewed this oval piece onto the opening of the tail.

To sport the tail, she has to simply put the belt around her waist. See the instagram video on how this costume in action!

I think this Luca Halloween costume can be worn just as the hoodie and pants for simpler wears, like when worn for school or just your everyday wear.

When she wants to step it up for Halloween night she can add the face mask and tail.

Thank you for all the info you included. My son loves Luca and I am in the process of making him his costume. The belt loop part of the tail is genius, I was trying figure out how I could make his work before I started sewing it all.

Sorry I didn’t get to this sooner but my daughter was wearing it at activities the last two days! The 22 inches long and 3 inches wide at the part near the belt. If you make the costume I’d love to see!

5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this: 🐚 Draw ou 5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this:
🐚 Draw out a stencil of your preferred shape. It's optional to paint the shape itself, but even a rough pencil line will keep you on task
🐚 Use strong glue and a lot of it! I used E6000 glue and ended up having to get more than what you see here.
🐚 Flip the shells over! There are some cool colors on the insides that may match better than the top side.
🐚 Clean and dry the shells thoroughly. Sorry, but I have no tips about this process as my mom had these ones for year from past trips, but you don't want some smelly shells hanging in your home!
🐚 Don't skip on those little shells as those minis are perfect to fill in the gaps of the collages.

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
