Derek’s been working on a big project the last few years: making over and organizing our garage!

Garage Makeover Part 1: turning a dingy garage into a clean, white space! | spotofteadesigns.com

I’ve already shared part I in which we turned our dingy, cold and dirty garage into a bright, clean space when he added sheet rock and painted the floor. Since then he’s been putting together organization systems and shelves to make it a more functional space.

Here’s a sneak peek on the theme that’s currently going on in our garage:

Everything in the garage is black and grey metal. Everything except this one cabinet we had.

It was a matching piece to our kitchen that was mounted in our garage when we first moved in. It’s great for extra storage but didn’t match the current design.

In comes Deco Art Chalky Finish Paint. You’ve already seen me show off my Entry Way Mirror and DIY Tray using this fun paint line so now we found a use for it in the garage!

First Derek removed the doors and painted everything Carbon black.

Next he painted the doors in Relic grey, painting over the black layer he just applied. (Looking now a the color guide, I kinda wish I picked the Yesteryear grey as it would’ve been a better contrast but I’m ok with this choice too!)

After that thoroughly dried, he broke out the fine sandpaper and got to work on the fun (yet somewhat messy) distressing technique. He rubbed the sandpaper along the edges and in nooks and crannies of the doors to allow for the black to come through. This gave off a distressed look so it didn’t seem to flat and boring.

Once we were satisfied on how that looked, he gave it a good cleaning with a dry cloth and applied a layer of the glaze to seal it all in.

After drying and reconnecting the cabinet doors, here’s what our cabinet looks like now! So happy that is no longer that light wood and matches our garage space a little more.
