At Derek’s first Father’s Day, Brielle was still just a baby. I helped her whip up a cute handmade craft for his desk at work but I wanted to give him something more. I decided to gift him a tradition.

I bought a book that Brielle could give him and they could read together. It was a dad themed book.
I helped her leave a message and her signature (a 9.5 month old handprint) inside as a memory.
It now sits on her shelf and can be read by him at night when putting her to bed or together with her sister Hailey.
Last year we continued the same tradition and plan to do so again this year. Last year’s gift was paired with other dad related items, including a “Daddy” personalized coke, a handmade card and a Sesame Street shirt (that he requested after seeing it at Target and he promptly wore to her birthday party a few weeks later).
If you have a little one at home, consider starting this tradition for Father’s Day. It makes for some super cute daddy and kid time, especially since we all know dads do the best voices when reading aloud!
Here are a few dad themed books already in our collection, recommended by fellow mom friends or on the list for a future Father’s Day:
- Your Baby’s First Word Will Be DADA (almost every mom friend I asked recommended this one!)
- Hop on Pop
- Just Me and My Dad
- Daddy Hugs
- Vader’s Little Princess (any Star Wars dads in the house?)
- Daddy’s Little Boy (Obviously not a title for our house but recommended by a boy mom)
- My Dad Is Fantastic
- BONUS: Toot (This one isn’t about dad per-say but it’s a subject close to their heart haha)

Just ordered Vader’s Little Princess for Lara’s BD. Her Minnie Mouse stood in for Princess Leia in her brother’s Star Wars themed room until I bought him a Leia Bobble Head. Lara was most distressed that her Minnie got kicked out of the galaxy! So, though her party is Minnie themed, this is appropriate and comes close to Father’s Day and the time she is moving to a big bed and will have books before bed!
