After a successful Valentine’s Day card making session with Brielle doing footprint art, I thought she was ready for another round of crafts and we got to work making cards for Mother’s Day!

I sat her in her highchair and put one of my old t-shirts on her as a smock.

I poured some of our Crayola 4ct Washable Fingerpaint onto small plates and was ready to dip her hand in the paint and press it onto pieces of paper.

This didn’t go as planned, since our little one is so “busy” and always wanting to “touch, touch touch” things. I decided to take another approach. I let her have fun and create “process art,” a term I recently learned about from Stephanie of Two-daloo in this post. As Stephanie describes, “process art is basically any activity where the focus is placed on the act of creating, not the finished product.”

And create she did! Brielle seemed to be more fascinated with the paper plate than the act of adding paint to the page.

I watched as she explored the new textures in front of her and ultimately made a colorful mess.

In the end I got three sheets of colorful papers and no true handprints. But I had one happy girl who had a fun time playing around with paints.

After letting them dry, I decided not to let these pieces of art go to waste. I cut out some parts to use as background papers and worked up a card for both Brielle’s Gwenma (a term Derek coined merging my mom’s name Gwen with her title of Grandma) and her Great Gramma Ingrid. I know this goes against the “process art” concept so I guess in the end you can consider this a great mommy/daughter collaborative art session. :)
