in Celebrations, Crafts & DIY, Halloween / Fall, Kids' Crafts, SVG Cut Files

Grab the free PDF template or free SVG cut file to create a fun Spookley the Square pumpkin kids craft with your kids this fall during a read aloud activity. This fun fall craft pairs well with the Spookley the Square Pumpkin book or animated special found on Netflix.

Just a few weeks ago, Hailey’s first grade teacher asked a fellow crafty mom and me if we’d like to participate win a “mystery reader” day for their class paired with a kids craft project. Even though it would be done on zoom, due to the “no parents allowed in the school” restrictions that are currently in place, we both immediately said yes and eventually landed on a theme all surrounding the adorable children’s book Spookley the Square Pumpkin.

In this story, Spookley, who is square in shape and not like the other pumpkins in the patch, actually saves the day when patching up a hole in the fence and stopping all the pumpkins from rolling away during a build storm. The story is a big lesson on celebrating differences and perfect for the first grade curriculum.

After the other mom read the Spookley the Square Pumpkin book aloud via a digital copy we were able to stream on their large whiteboard via zoom, I jumped in with this craft that I prepped and sent into the classroom a few days before. I provided little bags containing each of the pieces needed for the kids, plus an instruction sheet of the project, in case the zoom didn’t work and the teacher’s needed to do it on their own.

You can find the PDF instruction sheet which includes the template for each piece needed to create this craft at home here OR grab the free SVG cut file here to cut them on your Cricut machine!

How adorable does this collection look up on the billboard outside their classroom?! I love how each Spookley the Square pumpkin design is completely unique, since the kids had to cut the teeth and mouth pieces all their own. This kids craft not only practices scissor skills, creativity, and how to follow directions, but the story itself has a great message that the kids took to very easily.

I also learned they later watched the short animated show in Netflix a later week, which includes some cute songs and still that same great message.
