My parents have lived in the house I grew up in since 1987. Besides some minor updates, like replacing the linoleum floor with wood and scraping off the popcorn ceiling, not much was done to make the kitchen more modern. There were many other things that needed to be updated, not only from a visual perspective but to also make it more functional space for them. Since they usually host all the large family holidays, this winter they FINALLY made the decision to go forward with a kitchen remodel! Goodbye 1987, Hello 2013!
Issue #1: very little working counter space
Solution #1: Not only is there an expanded amount of counter space around the sink areas all the way to the wall towards the sliding glass door, they also have another countertop space, great for hosting parties on the right hand side near a new opening I will reveal below!
Issues #2 and #3: The garbage can was always exposed outside the cabinetry and a LARGE microwave took up much desired tabletop space on one of the counters.
Solution #2 and #3: Now the garbage can is tucked away inside a pull out drawer next to the stove. A new microwave is nestled in the area above the stove, freeing up more counter space for hosting/serving/prepping!
Issue #4: A large wall separated the kitchen from the living room, limiting the ability for an “open space” concept and the light that could come in through their living room windows.
Solution #4: A cut out was made between the living room and kitchen, allowing for more light and open space to enter the kitchen. Not only has it made the room brighter, it also allowed for this new side cabinet to be installed for additional storage and countertop space.
Isn’t it a beautiful, new sunny space?
