If you’re a long time follower here than you know this isn’t my first string art project as I love the look of this texture based craft that can have a modern farmhouse feel when you pair with stained or whitewashed wood.

Under the Sea #Nursery Seahorse String Art with Free #Printable | spotofteadesigns.com

In fact, I first created one for my youngest daughter’s Under the Sea themed nursery and made a white seahorse on a purple board. Years later I made ones with a cactus theme and even a skull using glow-in-the-dark thread so I have a thing or two to share! Follow along to read about my tips to create your own string art piece of decor for your home!

String Art Supplies:

  • Wood Board
  • Wire Nails (For this latest project I used 16×1″ nails)
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Template or draw your own design right on the wood
  • Crochet thread
  • Painter’s tape

My husband cut, sanded and stained these two boards to prep for my string art. Tape your template on the board using painter’s tape. Tip: print 2 templates or at least one smaller one as a reference for a later step.

Add nails to each corner point and any additional spaces. I usually do mine about 1/2″ apart.

Complete adding nails on your whole shape.

Remove the template. Note: you may have some slight paper fragments around the nails to remove any of these part prior to the next step.

Wrap your string around one nail in your area. Begin wrapping string around other nails inside that area, zigging and zagging throughout the space. Once it’s fully filled in to your liking, wrap around the outside of the design, wrapping around each nail as you go around. This helps to “outline” the final shape.

In the case of this design, I created a smaller heart shape in white to indicate their home then surrounded it with a teal color string. Repeat these steps for any large shapes. You can see on the photo above, only the inner string art is filled in and not the “outline step” shown below. This is the step you might find that second template print out helpful if you can’t easily distinguish a shape, like the crazy outline of some states!

I like the “outline” look to appear as a double edge around my design but you can create whatever pattern or style you like!

Some people also create their string art pattern using a specific pattern for more of a geometric look but I’m more of a random pattern gal.

I created this complementary set for my parents who recently bought a home in Delaware after living in New Jersey their whole lives. I thought this would be a nice side by side piece for their new home, paying homage to two places they call home. (Did you see how we welcomed them to their new home with an adult game of hide and seek?)

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
