When it comes to putting together a bedroom for kids, play off their loves, but leave wiggle room for growth in styles. Check out one preschool girl’s under the sea mermaid bedroom with a tour given by the 4.5 year old room owner herself!
This year I promised myself to take more photos in our home. I want to remember how we’ve decorated our home, but I also want to remember us IN it. When I mentioned to Hailey that I planned to take some photos of her room, she was quick to ask if she could be in them. And I thought, why not?!

Let’s continue! Please allow me to introduce you to the bedroom of this 4.5 year old giggle monster, who’s normally having the best day ever.
The wood letter H on her bedroom door is the same one I had made for our last home. In fact, many of the decorations of this space were ones I had made for her nursery that worked well in this new, larger space.
The girl loves her poses and she also loves mermaids. Her nursery had been more “under the sea” themed where I had mixed in all things aquatic, but now that she’s shown a great interest in mermaids, there’s more of a mix of these fantasy sea creatures.
Like most preschoolers, she has a big love of stuffed animals and currently sleeps with this collection of “friends” every night. The large 16″ mermaid Squishmallow was her favorite present from Santa this year and most often she uses it as a pillow.
We still have the Count the Waves canvas, octopus wall art, ombre name letters, and seahorse string art I had made on the back wall.
We’ve also added the bleeding tissue paper mermaid craft she made to the mix!
The love of the seashell growth chart I painted her hasn’t stopped.
Now that she’s older, she can actually read the measurements, unlike this earlier shot where she just loved the seashells!
We needed to add shelves over her dresser to hold all the trophies, crafts and nick knacks she has been accumulating.
This mermaid jewelry box was one of the big hits at Christmas this year. Open it to find all the beaded necklaces, slap bracelets and plastic rings that she treasures!
Unlike Brielle’s room, Hailey’s room has one larger window that lets in lots of light. Luckily I found a blackout curtain that fit the width that still allowed for her white toy chest to fit underneath. She loves to sit there or prop her little friends up when playing in her little space.
Say hello to my new favorite picture of Hailey, doing a pose she came up with all on her own. This skinny spot between the door and closet was the perfect place for this tall bookshelf she’s leaning on. I’ve always loves the sturdiness of these colorful milk crates for both their rooms as they don’t collapse and hold a lot of toys or games. The girls are both into keeping their books in rainbow order. (wonder where they get that from?)
The closet isn’t all that exciting just yet, but we recently upgraded both girl’s bedroom closets with a new closet system instead of the standard, single white grid on top. This allows them to each reach for their clothes on the lower levels, or organize their games on the center shelves. Later, when they’re bigger, they can hang low dresses on the side or have a second layer to hang even more clothes up top.

Where did the turquoise crates come from?
I will update the post but they were from land of nod, which is no longer around! Look up “milk crates” as I’m sure other vendors sell them in similar sizes.
