Sure most crafters have used their hot glue gun to attach items together but have you ever thought about using it to “draw” on your craft?
Years ago I made these these DIY spell books using this hot glue gun drawing technique to add designs and texture. This time around, I thought that I’d repeat this process, but on fabric instead of a book! Luckily my friends at Fairfield World were up for another collaboration with their fluffy pillow base forms to bring my Halloween couch accessory to life!
Halloween Boo Pillow Supplies
- Crafter’s Choice 18″ Pillow Base Forms
- Blank Pillow Case
- Embroidery Thread (Purples, oranges, black and grey) and Needle
- Hot Glue Gun
- Water or Air Dry Marking Pen
- Cardboard Scrap
Open your pillow case (this is the one I used) and insert a scrap piece of cardboard inside. I wanted to be extra careful about the next hot glue step incase the glue oozed through the fabric and stuck these layers together. Spoiler – they didn’t but I still suggest this step!
Next use your water or air dry marking pen and draw your word or icon of choice. In this case, I though a script “boo” was in order.
Heat up your hot glue gun and S L O W L Y push glue over this guide line in a thin stream. Allow this to cool completely.
Thread your needle with embroidery thread and begin inside the pillow, threading up and over the hot glue gun guide and insert back into the pillow case. You’re basically covering the glue with thread to make it colorful and soft!
Take your time covering the hot glue with your embroidery thread colors of choice. To make it a little more unique, I mixed oranges for the B, purples for the first O and black with grey for the second O.
This is a great craft to prep in advance and bring on the go! Sew while binging a tv show (I recently watched all 12 season of Big Bang Theory), as a passenger of a car, or at the sidelines of your kid’s game.
Once the sewing is complete, stick the pillow form into the pillow case. This fluffy form is filled with our favorite Poly-Fil so you know it will not only be cute but also comfy if someone does rest their head on it in our living room.
To get in the Halloween mood, I swapped out all the picture frames on our picture ledge with pictures of all our DIY Halloween costumes from the past! This boo pillow now completes this little corner of our living room tis spooky season!
