If you couldn’t tell from these photos, this isn’t a recent photoshoot. I just never got around to putting this fun tutorial on the blog. Fans of Frozen 2 will love to give this fun painted birch tree effect a try when styling a Frozen party this winter!
DIY Birch Tree Party Backdrop Supplies:
- White paper roll
- Large black paper
- Acrylic paint – black, grey
- Cardstock – oranges, reds and purples
- Scraps of cardboard
- Painter’s Tape
- Paper Plates
- Pencil
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors
Roll out your white paper roll the height of your party room (or at high as you really want).
Draw different widths of trees on the full length of these white sheets.
Birch trees traditionally have horizontal lines around the bark. Pour grey paint onto a plate and spread it out. Dip the scrap of cardboard in the paint and begin to decorate the trees in these horizontal patterns.
Vary the amount of paint and pressure you use on the paper to vary the prints.
Pour black paint onto a different plate. Dip a new scrap of cardboard in the black paint and lay it on the vertical side of the tree, along your pencil lines. Pull the cardboard towards the middle to spread the paint in different patterns.
Repeat this on both vertical sides of the tree. Choose one consistent side of the tree, in this case the left, to be thicker to help give the perception of shadowing in the forest.
Add some black horizontal lines throughout the tree to give some color variance.
Once the paint dries thoroughly, cut out the tree shapes.
Draw twig shapes on the black paper.
Cut out these shapes and do your best to use all the paper as best you can.
Cut out leaves in reds, oranges and purples.
On the party day, use painter’s tape to attach the painted birch trees to your walls, then branches, then the leaves. Tip: while most trees can stand upright, some can even grow at a slight angle or even overlap.
Add the black paper branches at different heights of the trees, making them all look as if they grew upward.
Your DIY Birch Tree backdrop is now complete for your Frozen party making it a great spot to strike a pose with photo props or rock a special costume!
Set them in a pattern starting low at the left and higher at the right. Friends can practice their gram worthy pictures where they “blow” the leaves upward.
Make more and put them behind your dessert table full of delicious goodies!
