Everyone loves that “stuffing their face with their birthday cake” photo from a child’s first birthday party. To help make a memorable photo for this adorable occasion, consider a custom high chair garland that matches your party’s color or theme!

Here’s a quick tutorial on the cheap and easy ribbon scrap high chair garland I made for Hailey’s big day at the Under the Sea themed birthday party!
Supplies:
- Felt
- Ribbons
- Scissors (these are my favorite for cutting felt!)
- Disappearing Ink Marking Pen (optional but helpful)
First cut one long piece of ribbon and larger pieces of felt to use as the base of the banner. Cut two slits at the top of the belt base so you can slide through the base ribbon.
Use the disappearing ink pen to draw your message on the felt. Do you see the word “ONE”? I know the photo above is a VERY poor example of how awesome thing pen is since it’s purple ink on a purple felt, but trust me, this pen is awesome for felt crafts!
Now you can add the ribbon scraps on the base ribbon. To do this, I used the same technique used when making Brielle’s Christmas tutu from her first Christmas card. Fold the ribbon in half and slip it under the ribbon. Take the two ends and pull through the loop that was created. Pull tight to secure.
Continue adding ribbons on either side and behind the felt shapes. TIP: I didn’t personally care if my ribbons are shown looping under or over consistently throughout my craft but if you do, make sure to pay attention and do it the same each every time.
Fun Fact: these ribbons have been in my collection for quite some time! Some were from gifts received at my bridal shower, from the pinwheel cookie pop party favors my friend Cherylin made and wrapped for Brielle’s first birthday, and even some were used on my Deck the Halls Christmas mirror hung in our house.
I ended up using tape to hang my high chair garland since we kept opening and closing her tray and I didn’t want to tie it on, but perhaps you can figure out a better way to hang it with that long ribbon belt base.
Get your camera ready and capture all those face stuffing photos! Did my Hailey love her cake? OH YES! We did dessert outside and threw the sprinkler on for the kids to wash off.
