Favorite Products For A 5 Year Old

in Favorite Products, Lifestyle

The 5 year old kindergartner is a wonderful age of huge growth, physically, mentally and emotionally. They comprehend more, can communicate in new ways and are like a sponge soaking everything up! This favorite products series is one I’ve done since Brielle was 5 months old and I now offer you, dear SOTD loyal followers, her favorite products as enjoyed by this curious and excited 5 year old!

As she’s turning 6 pretty soon I wanted to recap some new toys, games, crafts, accessories and educational items she’s been enjoying more in her 5th year. While this list does includes lots for a girl, plenty of these items, especially the games, are gender neutral so keep reading, boy moms!

TOYS AND GAMES

  • Card holder – Brielle’s love of board and card games grew this past year with Uno being a beloved favorite. When she was on a run of grabbing too many cards she had trouble holding them all and this Little Hands card holder came into play. I HIGHLY recommend this, especially saving it for a stocking stuffer or Easter basket filler type situation.
  • Card Game Multiple Pack – In addition to Uno, Brielle has discovered a love of other card games, including Old Maid, Crazy 8’s and War! We have this one tin set but it’s unfortunately no longer available, so here’s a similar one!  Tip: Both Brielle and her 3.5 year old sister don’t yet know which cards are higher than another (meaning Ace is higher than King) so I made a little cheat sheet on the hierarchy they reference when playing War on their own.
  • Disney Doorables – A surprise toy with multiple openings and cute Disney figures inside!
  • Flarp – Yep even girls like fart noises and potty humor! The girls played with this endlessly at our friends house and upon seeing it gifted for their birthdays they were both hooked! All you do it squeeze this putty into the cup and the trapped air makes hilarious noises. It is somewhat slime like, which they also enjoy, but it’s not super sticky. Still we only play with it at a table or on an easy to wipe floor. I’ve also seen it at Dollar Tree if you have one local!
  • Monopoly Junior –This scaled down version of the classic game is fun to play and one that doesn’t last too long! There are only $1 bills, so basic counting is used, and there are no mortgages so you just keep playing until someone runs out of money (which is not as long as the traditional game)! She got this for Christmas and the novelty of this classic hasn’t run out yet!
  • Sorry – When she first got this game I wasn’t too sure she was ready for it, mostly due to the card that moves 7 spaces, but allows you to split that between two pieces. But once giving it a go, I realized the math portion of the game is great for this age. This is another that’s in big rotation in our house and does not take forever to play! Her sister Hailey is only 3.5 and is also a pro at this classic board game.
  • Thin Ice – This is such a fun game that requires little skill but just a little water and a tissue. They do need help to set it up but once it’s ready kids can play without help. Just pick up a plastic “marble” from the water logged trench and place it on top of the tissue. Keep piling them on until one finally breaks the tissue.
  • Eye Found It Disney – This game combines their love of I Spy searching and Disney! We play this with a family at night but I would definitely recommend playing it in good lighting as the little pictures can be pretty small to find.
  • Barrel of Monkeys Game – We picked up one of these for a jungle party I was shooting and I was pleasantly surprised that it interested Brielle during quiet time. She found it was easier to pick them up in a string on a carpet, not a flat tabletop or tile floor but she was able to connect all 10 a few times now!

  • Guidecraft Dress Up station – Santa brought this dress up station which is a go to item for most little girls that come to our house! It holds plenty of dress up dresses, but also has a bottom area for dress up shoes, 2 fabric tubs for other accessories and a shelf on top that we keep their jewelry. The mirror on the side allows them to check out how they look.

CRAFTS

  • Simply Needlepoint – I started introducing Brielle into more advanced arts and crafts this year, trying activities that required more skill or concentration. This is one craft she still needs to do next to me to make sure she’s lining things up with the stitches, but I’m hoping she’ll get the hang of it and it can become another independent craft she can make herself. She’s been working on the flower one on and off but we also have this butterfly design.

  • Paint by Stickers Kids – These are a more advanced version of the sticker puzzles she enjoyed when she was 4. That version was just squares and worked with number recognition. These designs are all different shapes and sizes and together make some complicated looking animal designs. Other designs from this company your 5 year old might love: Unicorns and Magic, Beautiful Bugs, Under the Sea, and Another Gender Neutral set.
  • Sticker Dolly Dress Up Books – Both girls received ones of these books which have been a lifesaver at entertaining them when sitting on the sidelines of their sibling’s gymnastics class. Each page has a coordinating sticker set with plenty of extras in case one rips. We have both the Lola the Lollipop Fairy and Izzy the Ice-Cream Fairy books!

ACCESSORIES

  • Plastic Cat Headbands –The fashion choices these kids make can be quite hilarious especially when it comes to the added accessories. Brielle was gifted a pack of these plastic and colorful cat headbands for her 5th birthday and has been rocking them all year long.  I love that the pack came with lots of different colors so she has plenty of options to wear with all her outfits!
  • Alex Hair Chalk – While these were on our list for 4 year olds, it’s worth mentioning again. Once they hit elementary school, kids have a lot of themed days at school. We did our best to hit most of them with the themed outfit and chalked hair to match the theme (as seen by the blue hair in the below photo) were usually a must!
  • Alex Color Shift Ombre Nails – This set might include small bottles of polish but they are packed with big fun! Each color turns a different color or shade depending if it’s in hot or cold water/air. She and her sister love to test this in the bath or when washing their hands, which HEY is a great way to encourage good hygiene!
  • Personal Kid Sized Umbrella – The Easter bunny brought this Unicorn and Rainbow umbrella and it was a HUGE hit our rainy spring season for both my daughters!

  • DIY T-shirts – I know this isn’t something everyone can do, but those of you with a Cricut or Silhouette machine, make your kids some shirts! Both my girls LOVE the ones I’ve made them, mostly because they have to do with songs, school, or things they already love. These Cat & Jack shirts and these One Wonder shirts are the kinds I keep using for the DIY T-shirts I make for them or their friends! Check out all the free SVG files I have on the blog!

BOOKS

  • Bob Books Set 1: beginning reader – Brielle learned all her letter sounds and built her sight word vocabulary this kindergarten year. These beginning reader books really helped build her confidence that she CAN read. This set was travel friendly so we keep it in the car where she could pull it out and read it when we are driving.
  • Pete the Cat My First I Can Read Set – Pete the Cat is big in the 5 year old audience! The characters are memorable and the messages are always positive.
  • Elephant and Piggie – We actually don’t have any Elephant and Piggie books but they are ones she always wants to check out both at her school library and the town library when we go!
  • Dr. Seuss – Overall she’s been really understanding the silliness of Dr. Seuss books this year and also loves that she can read most of the (real, non made up) words that are included in many of this books.  Hop on Pop was a top runner!
