Father’s Day Gift: Beer Cap Clock

Spot of Tea Designs readers have already met my dad, a laid back guy who works in the craft beer industry. (and the best daddy in the world)

Last year I asked him to save me some used beer caps for an art project. Instead he gave me these:

A few brandy new beer caps. With a clock kit ordered from ebay, I got to work turning these pieces into a clock for his office at the brewery, a gift for Father’s Day!

Supplies:

• 12 x 12 inch white canvas
• Clock kit
• Acrylic Paint and Paintbrush
• Scrapbook Paper
• Mod Podge
• 12 beer caps
• Glue gun (not pictured)
• Ruler
• Pencil

I first started by painting the edges of the canvas with green paint.

Next I realized I don’t know how to use Mod Podge. haha. I messed up with the first sheet of paper (shown in the supplies shot). Take two! I applied a generous coat of decoupage glue on the back of the paper and laid it on the canvas. I tried to push out all the air bubbles but it began to curl. After semi drying (did I need to dry it more?) I applied another coat on top of the paper to seal it onto the canvas.

When it dried, there were some wrinkles in the paper on the canvas. It wasn’t all over (which might’ve looked cool) but only in a few spots on one side. To distract from this error I decided to try to blend that mishap in with a little dry brushing technique. I like how it came out!

Next I used the grids on my cutting mats and a ruler to determine the center point of the canvas. I made a hole to insert the clock parts.

You can see the clock base on the back here. I used hot glue to secure this piece in place and ensure that it wouldn’t spin and keep more accurate time.

Next I assembled the clock pieces. I arranged all the beer caps on the front in a large circle at the designated areas for each hour then glued them down using hot glue. After inserting a battery into the device, this baby was ready to tell time. (side note: I didn’t think about it later but I probably should’ve photographed the clock at 5pm, as you know “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.” :)
