During Halloween no one is safe from the horror of DIY zombie makeovers, especially kids’ toys! It’s amazing to see what a little paint, a dirty dress, and ok — a hack saw, can do to a beloved toy. I went all zombie outbreak on this stand up hair styling toy turning it into something beyond the grave with little tools and little time.
DIY Zombie Candy Bowl Supplies:
- Child’s Styling Head Toy (we scored this Rapunzel one at the thrift store for $4!)
- Child’s dress (this was actually my Christening dress, whoops!)
- Acrylic paint – white, black, green, red, green, yellow
- Assortment of paint brushes
- Small Bowl
- Scissors
- Hack Saw
First, scour the thrift store for a girls doll or toy that can easily be zombie-fied. Did I invent that word? In this case, I found one of those fun “Style her hair” Razunzel toys that already had a build in standing function.
Next, give your doll a mullet. Yep, I went ahead trimmed a good old “business in front, party in the back” hairstyle so the long hair wouldn’t be in the way during our next step.
Grab a hack saw and give her lid a good chop! This hallow space will provides a great area to insert a bowl later.
Let them zombie-fying begin! Cover the body and dress with a mixture of white, green and black paint. Paint some into the strands of hair to give it that “just got out of the grave” look.
Keep going! Dress your doll in a recycled lace dress, grab your yellow, black, brown and red paint and get even more creepy. Water down brown paint and apply within the dress to make it look dirtier. As I mentioned above, this was actually my Christening dress from when I was a baby, but don’t worry, I asked my mom permission first.
Don’t forget the red paint around the eyes or mouth!
Once dry, insert a food safe the bowl into the hollow head so it can easily hold some party food edibles. Tip: Twizzlers bites look just like chunks of brain!
Once sticking a bowl inside her hollow head, this child’s play toy becomes anything but playful!
My favorite thing about party DIY projects is that they often make the perfect centerpiece for your party theme!
Stage your zombie candy bowl on your dessert table, next to all the zombie party treats! I have a whole post outlining those seen on this table, including the cupcakes that look like brains!
