Plush crafts are great as you can fill then with as much or as little fluffy material as you want. But when it comes to plush that you want to display, like as in a piece of holiday decor, you’ll want to consider a filler material with a little weight to help the plush character to sit nicely. That’s why, for this Valentine’s Day craft, in addition to use Poly-Fil Fiber Fill that I already have loved using in past fluffy projects, I’ve partnered with Fairfield World and also used Poly Pellets, weighted stuffing beads. These small weighted beads come in a variety of package sizes, but I personally love that this 24oz bag came with an easy pour spout to add to your plush creations!
Let’s learn how to create these fuzzy holiday characters that you can make with any color socks for any occasion!
DIY Valentine Sock Plush Supplies:
- Pair of Fuzzy Socks
- Poly Pellets
- Poly-Fil Fiber Fill
- Beads for eyes and nose
- Sewing thread, embroidery thread and needle
- Accessories – mini bow and pipe cleaner
- Sharpie
- Funnel
The magic of this Valentine craft is that you’re basically just using fuzzy socks as available fabric. To start this Valentine sock plush you must first turn your socks inside out and grab your Sharpie marker to make some templates. Draw two long arms and two stubbier feet shapes on one sock and a small cutout, as shown on the sock on the right, which will act as your plush body.
Cut out all the shapes. Sew the plush body by sewing along the edge of the ears and head. Start sewing each of the legs and arm shapes, but don’t fully close it up as you’ll need to leave room for the next step.
Turn the legs and arm shapes right side out, insert a funnel and start pouring in your Poly Pellets. I chose these weighted beads for the arms especially as they’ll help to make the arms hang down at the plush body side.
Also sew the ears and head of the plush body and you’ll have components that look like the above.
Next sew the arms and legs to the plush body and any eyes or nose accessories to the face. Turn your plush sock character upside down so you can do the last filling step and add more Poly Pellets to the body.
Once complete, sew up the bottom of the body component tightly so no beads some out. Add any accessories and stitch any additional areas, like a line across the ears or neck to help define the shape. Is this Valentine Sock Plush a car? A dog? A bear? I honestly don’t know! LOL. I was going for a cat when originally designing it but I kinda love how open this plush guy is to interpretation!
I had sewn this sock plush character while my daughters were at school and they came out as I was shooting these final shots. I heard squeals of excitement on how cute these were as when you’re mom buys a pair of fuzzy socks and Walmart and declares they want to turn them into a sock character, they could not imagine the outcome.
These two Valentine sock plush sit in each of their bedrooms, where one believe she had a cat and the other has a bear. See this construction in action on my instagram reel!
