DIY Fabric Gift Bag

in Celebrations, Easter

A gift is nice to receive but sometimes the presentation of it can make or break the reaction. Step up your gift giving game by creating reusable fabric gift bags using this simple tutorial.

Like many millennial moms, I have a tub of gift bags previously given to me or my kids for future gifting purposes. But now that my kids are getting older, they tend to get more gift cards so therefore less gift bags and my supply is dwindling.

I do, however, have a large supply of Oly-Fun material from Fairfield World, which I easily turned into some drawstring bags using this simple tutorial.

DIY Drawstring Bag Supplies:

  • Oly-Fun Material
  • Needle and thread (or sewing machine)
  • Ribbon
  • Fabric Scissors (these are my favorites)
  • Optional: acrylic paint, wood shapes and wood block or stamp

These drawstring bags are made using Oly-Fun material, which is strong and durable to hold it’s shape and available in an assortment of colors. Since it comes in large bolts, you can create drawstring bags of any size you want!

Cut (2) pieces of fabric to your idea size, knowing you’ll need extra length on the top ends for the ribbon slot and seam allowance on the width.

I didn’t have any stamps to add a little something to these fabric bags so I made my own using a wood block, wood cutout shapes and hot glue.

Stamp shapes on the Oly-Fun fabric using a light amount of acrylic paint and allow to dry. Tip: apply paint onto the stamp but stamp it lightly on a scrap of paper before pressing onto the fabric so remove the bulk of the thick paint.

Cut (1) piece of ribbon that is twice the width of the bag, plus 4 inches.

Next you’ll create a ribbon channel. Lay your fabric right side down and fold over the top half that is slightly bigger than the ribbon width. Use pins to secure in place then sew this end closed.

Repeat on the other fabric piece, which will be the second side of the fabric bag.

Put the two right sides facing one another and sew the other 3 sides to create the bag shape. Do NOT sew on the ribbon channel.

If you desire you can add a gusseted bottom to this bag so that it has a flat end to stand up. To do this keep the bag with the right sides facing in and open it up folding the seams down the middle like so. Draw a small triangular shape and mark with chalk. Sew on this mark. Snip the triangle piece off to lessen the bulk in the fabric bag.

Turn your bag right side out. Thread the ribbon through the two channels, tying a knot at the end of each ribbon. You have now created your first drawstring bag!

To close, pull the drawstrings and tie a loose knot to secure the closure.

This particular design is Easter ready to gift a chocolate bunny, slew of filled eggs or spring break essential. Swap out the stamped shapes to use this drawstring idea for any holiday or gift giving occasion! Swap the colors or double line the bags for a thicker use.

Tag me if you end up using this tutorial to create your own drawstring bag!
