If your child loves the weather, is a fan of the sound of rain on a summer night or just loves to be unique with a fun costume accessory, they’ll love rocking this DIY Rain Cloud Costume on October 31st. Knowing that kids will likely have to go in and out of doors or might be in tight spots, I designed this costume with a removeable cloud component so they can easily get where they need to be on Halloween night without having to worry about fitting through doorways.

Let’s create the raindrops first! Download my free raindrop template that showcases raindrops at three different sizes. Cut out the templates then trace them onto blue felt, making sure to make 2 for each raindrop.

As my umbrella had 8 spokes, I made 16 raindrop shapes to create 8 raindrops. Tie a wood bead or washer onto fishing line. Sew around the outside of the raindrop shape, eventually inserting some Poly-Fil to make it fluffy and the wood bead in to help give it some weight and help it hang.

Next lay a piece of white fabric on your umbrella and cut to shape. Make sure to also cut a slit from the center hole around to the outer edge so you’ll easily be able to add it back on at a later date.

Tip: Use a Sharpie to label each spoke and the corresponding fabric area that fits that spot. Add velcro to each corner so it can be reassembled at a later step.

Begin creating small tufts of Poly-Fil and use hot glue to attach it to your white fabric sheet, aka your cloud base.

Continue adding the Poly-Fil to cover the whole fabric shape. Also glue some onto the top point of the umbrella to cover.

Tie your raindrops onto each of the 8 spokes around the umbrella. Tip: You may choose to hang your raindrops at different lengths.

Now you have your own personal rain storm to carry around with you on Halloween night. Friends will admire your keen love of meteorology and DIY crafting skills at the same time! When you need to put it away for the next Halloween celebration, simply remove the fluffy fabric cloud base by unsticking the velcro pieces and closing up the umbrella.
