As part of my wanting to read 45 books this year, and wanting to read/reread 20 classics from my 50 Before Fifty list, I read The Wizard of Oz for the first time. Soon after my 10 year old also read it and it inspired her to want to be Dorothy for Halloween. While I did go the purchased Dorothy costume approach, it didn’t come with the red sparkly shoes she wanted. Insert mom’s craft room and the ability to DIY shoes.

DIY Dorothy Shoes Supplies:
- White Sneakers
- Red Acrylic paint
- Mod Podge
- Red Glitter
- Paintbrush and sponge brush

I grabbed this simple pair of white sneakers from Walmart, having had painted the black pair before for Zombie shoes years earlier. These were only being worn for 2 Halloween events so I didn’t bother going fabric paint and went straight to good old acrylic.

Next I applied a healthy coat of Mod Podge on the fabric areas with the sponge brush. I then poured red glitter to fully cover.

After fully drying one day, I applied a second coat of Mod Podge on top to seal the glitter in it’s place.

These DIY Dorothy Shoes were then ready to rock for the school trunk or treat and eventually for Halloween night.

It was an affordable way to finish this costume look without breaking the budget!
