Super Cute and Easy Butterfly Breakfast

Kids are never too young to start learning about the processes of nature, such as the names of baby animals or even the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. We look for creative ways to introduce these concepts, such as books, visits to the zoo or in today’s case, a playful breakfast plate! Follow these step by step photos to create a caterpillar and butterfly breakfast and discuss the transformation with your toddler.

Brielle is 3.5 now and very interested in the world around her. She’s soaking things up like a sponge and I see her apply concepts she learned in books or on shows into her life. As I plan to visit more zoos this spring, including one with a butterfly exhibit, I’m using any opportunity, including breakfast, to have an educational experience. I recently used Eggo Dory Blueberry Bubbles Waffles and Eggo Buttermilk Mini Pancakes to create a fun butterfly transformation breakfast for us to enjoy!

I picked up both boxes in the frozen breakfast aisle at Target (where some other miscellaneous housewares and party supplies hopped into my cart. Don’t you hate when that happens?) Everyone is already familiar with the yellow box, but did you notice the new green label addition? Eggo has a new formulation that is free from artificials. All Eggo products are now made with colors and flavors from natural sources. Sounds good to this mom!

To create our cute breakfast, I raided the fridge and pantry for some fresh fruit and peanut butter, staples most have at home.

To create the caterpillar I started with 5 mini pancakes cooked according to the instructions on the box.

Since bananas are my favorite pancake topping, I cut up some slices and add them on each caterpillar segment.

Next up came some blueberries for eyes and antennae and some strawberry pieces for feet.

To complete the scene I added some “green grass” with sliced grapes and a sun made from a navel orange.

We all know that a caterpillar builds a small cocoon around itself and then transforms into a butterfly so I was off to create a pretty and delicious butterfly as part two of our educational butterfly breakfast!

I started with one Eggo Dory Blueberry Bubbles Waffle cut in half and laid on the plate. The center body was created with yet more banana slices.

Next I spread on a layer of creamy peanut butter to cover the wings.

Finally the wings were topped with some strawberries halved and cut into a heart shape and blueberries for antennae.

My taste tester was chomping at the bit to give these breakfast creations a try. While she has had clementine oranges and plain waffles before, this was her first taste of navel oranges and blueberry waffles. Let me tell you she’s now a super fan of both!

Luckily she’s not a picky eater but if you have one in your house, how could they resist these cuties?
