‘Tis the season for handmade ornaments! Turn any strips of paper, including a beer label, into fun ornaments to deck out your Christmas tree using these easy (yet kinda messy) steps:

There are two liquid materials I’m scared of more than anything: bleach and decoupage glue so make sure to cover your surface! No one needs decoupage glue on their dining room table so seriously make sure you protect your surface when creating this type of craft!

Supplies:

  • Glass ornaments
  • Papers (map, beer label, music sheet, book pages)
  • Bottle caps
  • Decoupage glue
  • Foam brush
  • Ribbon
  • Baker’s twine
  • Scissors
  • Heavy duty hole punch (I used my Crop-a-dile!)

Full disclosure here: my parents own the brewery featured so I had easy access to unused beer labels. Our brewery doesn’t give these out to consumers but we have seen emails where people ask for them and do see them on places like e-bay for other breweries so someone must give them out!

I made beer label Christmas ornaments but you could just as easily use any papers – music sheets, vintage book pages, 0r maps. Any of these recycled paper ideas could be meaningful for the receiver.

Cut papers into skinny strips and remove the ornament hook/topper.  Use the foam brush to apply a thin layer of decoupage glue to the ornament.

Press down one paper strip and cover in more decoupage glue.

Continue around the ornament until fully covered. Once completely covered I went ahead and used my fingers to mush down all the papers and make sure they were all smooth. Yep it was pretty messy!

To dry, I pushed wooden sticks in styrofoam and turned the ornament upside down to let them dry.

To finish, I punched a hole in the bottle cap with my Crop-A-Dile and tied it to the neck of the ornament with baker’s twine. After adding the ornament topper back on, I slipped a ribbon through and it was ready to be hung!

These ornaments are cheap and easy as they are based off two materials: decoupage glue and paper.
