Woodburning Christmas Ornament {Guest Post}

in Celebrations, Christmas, Crafts & DIY

Longtime SOTD readers may remember 2012, or the year of the weddings on this blog. That year I was a bridesmaid, maid of honor and bride all within 5 months. Vanessa’s July wedding was a beautifully coordinated Modern Vintage style with lots of DIY elements from this graphic designer bride. Last Christmas she was part of an ornament exchange at work where she created these beautiful ornaments using a wood burning technique. Lucky for me (and for you, my loyal readers) she took photos along the way with hopes of FINALLY guest posting on my blog after all my begging gentle encouragement.

First a note from Vanessa: This was my first time ever woodburning however I was very happy with the results. My biggest tip? Just be patient! It does take a lot of time per ornament depending on how easily/quickly the wood darkens to your liking but the results is worth it!

Supplies Needed:

  • Woodburning Tool
  • Drill
  • Small Screw Eyes
  • Printed Design Template (Tip: print a few in case they get damaged while transferring the design)
  • Tape
  • Graphite Paper
  • Embossing Stylus Tool
  • Wood Slices
  • Scrap Wood for testing
  • Cutting Mat or protective work surface
  • Scissors
  • Decorative Twine or Ribbon
  • Wire
  • Small Decorative Christmas Lights

Pre-drill into the top of each wood slice & screw in a small screw eye.

Layer your printed design template and a piece of graphite paper on top of a wood slice and tape to hold in place.

Transfer the design to the wood slice with the embossing stylus tool, checking to make sure it’s visible enough.

Make sure your woodburning tool is heated and test out the different tips on the scrap wood to decide which will work best for your design.

Use the woodburning tool to go over your entire design until you are happy with the results.

Note some slices of wood will be easier to woodburn on and the design will come out darker right away. Others will take more time and a few pass overs with the tool to achieve the same darkness.

Once you have finished the woodburning, attach the twine or ribbon to the screw eye for hanging. Add any decorative elements with the wire if desired (I used the small Christmas Lights)
