Use Your Stash Challenge: Recycling Picture Frames

Boring white frame turned holiday candy cane stripe design | spotofteadesigns.com

Merry Christmas Eve!!

A few weeks ago I guest posted at Made in a Day showing how I turned a basic white frame into a candy stripe design for Christmas!

Check out some additional information on this step by step tutorial below:

If you’re like me, you have a large box somewhere in your basement of random picture frames that are no longer on display. Most of mine are cheap ones that I had from apartment living but some were also purchased for the cake table at my wedding. Recently, when going through my collection, I found a white one that had a few scratches on it. Instead of throwing it away, I recycled it for a Christmas craft using a “Just Add Glitter” approach!

Supplies:

  • White Frame
  • Double Sided Tape (mine was left over from my Nursery Canvas Paintings)
  • Glitter
  • Decoupage Glue
  • Paintbrush and Small Cup/Dish
  • Pencil and Ruler
  • Baker’s Twine
  • Chipboard Shape (mine was from a K&Company Brenda Walton Christmas collection)

I decided to turn this forgotten frame into a cute candy cane stripe design. I used the grid on my cutting mat, a pencil and ruler to create my lines first. Then I applied my double sided tape along these lines. Tip: slightly cover them up on the edge so you don’t have to worry about pencil lines showing.

Peel the adhesive backing and sprinkle the tape with red glitter. Tip: Fold a piece of scrap paper in half in both directions then unfold and lay your frame on top. It will help the extra glitter collect in the creases in the center instead of getting all over your table. It also helps with pouring back into your bottle.

Once the tape is covered in glitter, brush off any excess that is stuck to the frame using a dry paintbrush. Pour some decoupage glue into a small dish or cup (as to not contaminate the rest of the bottle) and cover the frame. This will help seal the glitter and hopefully stop it from rubbing off everywhere.

Once dry, insert a photo into the frame, add some embellishments and put it out on display!

Inside I slipped the photo of her first visit with Santa, where she wore a red dress and the custom headband I made her. She had just woken up from a nap while waiting on line so she’s holding Santa’s finger for comfort! :)

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial (and this cameo by me as a photographer in the photo above)!
