If you’ve been here a while you might remember our backyard looking a little sparse when we first moved in:
The backyard was basically a blank slate!
Over the last 5 years we’ve been updated this space with DIY creations, hands on installation and the help of outside companies to add a paver patio, fire pit, vegetable garden, shed and just last spring, a covered pavilion! When we’re not on the softball field, our family loves to spend time out outside in this space.
The only issue is, the seats around the firepit can feel a little comfortable after a prolonged smores session. Luckily, I’m happy to announce another partnership with Fairfield World which supplied some of their products so I could create custom seats for our family! For this project I got to try their OlyFun material as my base material for the cushion and Nu Foam for the inserts.
No Sew DIY Outdoor Cushion Supplies:
- OlyFun® Slate Gray Bolt
- Nu Foam Cushion Foam – 22″ x 22″ x 2″
- HeatnBond PeelnStick Fabric Fuse Adhesive
- Fabric Scissors
- Metal Ruler
- Chalk
- Sharpie
- Serrated Knife
First measure and mark the area you want to create the cushion.
Use a serrated knife (like a bread knife) to saw back and forth along the line and create the cut.
Oly-Fun’s claim to fame includes the ability to sew it, glue it, staple it, pin it, tie it, paint it, embellish it, stamp it, or stencil it. They also say you can scissor, rotary, or die cut it and for this project I gave it the scissor test! I’ll tell ya, it cut perfectly!
I unrolled this large bolt and placed my cut Nu Foam cushion on top. Cut to size to allow for a slight overlap on all four sides. Note: I actually kept the double layer of OlyFun for this project which allowed for a deep covering for the cushion. This required some extra tape work, which was no problem at all, as it was still no sew!
Apply fabric adhesive along the edge of the OlyFun, peel the adhesive covering, and attach to the underside of the foam.
Carefully fold the corners up and also attach those to the underside. Do your best to make them look symmetric. Think like you’re wrapping a present!
Once you adhered all four edges up, cut an additional piece of OlyFun to cover the bottom of your cushion and hide any unsightly corner work, like me.
Honestly I wasn’t worried about how it looked on the bottom since I knew it would be covered with this extra fabric and also…. under my butt! lol
Now these fluffy outdoor cushions are ready to pull out at a moment’s notice for a family hang outside.
And when not in use, they can easily be packed in the patio box we keep all our other chair cushions in.
If you give my no sew DIY outdoor cushion project a try, give me a tag so I can see your handiwork!
