It’s been 6 months since we got the keys to our house and I’m happy to report that it already feels like home to us! There’s more room for us to all play and grow, we each have designated spaces and we’re all learning how to make it more functional and organized. Take a little home tour to see our place 6 months later.

Nehil HOme Tour - 6 months after purchasing | spotofteadesigns.com

We are still far of done in this home but I feel like we’ve done a lot in the 6 months since we bought this place.  (You can see all the before photos here) Soon after getting the keys Derek got to work ripping out the inconsistent carpets and flooring on the first floor. We’ve painted several rooms and he’s added new taller trim in most of these spaces. Our plans have changed in some rooms and plenty, of course, we haven’t even touched.

I plan to go through some room reveals down the room when I feel like rooms are more finalized so this is really just a basic overview post on some spaces that look different than 6 months ago.

Nehil Home Tour: the "before" photos - entry way | spotofteadesigns.com

When we first moved in the entryway staircase looked like the above. It was covered in dirty original carpet, it had a dated look with the spiral railing and the small, skinny hardwood floors. Below is how it looks now.

First, the floors were replaced here and in all the first floor with a brown/grey large plank hardwood flooring by Derek. We removed all the carpet on the stairs and we had a local company come and redo the the railings and threads. They did a great job but since it was so late in the fall, we didn’t get around to staining/painting this yet before it got too cold.

Both the paint and stain will be pretty smelly so Derek wants to make sure to do this during a time we can have the doors open to help with the smell. This will be a spring project for him! Until then we have these patches all over the wall and that’s just fine with us!

To the right you’ll find what we originally thought may be the office. While we’re still not sure what this space will be, it isn’t the office. For now it holds this old couch (that no one sits on) and extra wood floors for when Derek does the stairs and upstairs hallway. It will be a temporary kitchen space when we eventually redo the kitchen so, for now, we just leave it as is!

To the left you’ll find our dining room. This is probably the most viewed space you’ve seen in our house due to all the parties I’ve been able to style and shoot in this space. Nothing is different here besides the floor as we have yet to decide on a wall color or even change the lighting. Right now it’s where we eat all our meals and where I shoot all my party setups so it’s a well used spot in our home!

Here’s the living room when we first moved in.

And here it is now! The living room is a space we LOVE to be in. The length of this room allows the girls to have a playspace with their much loved play kitchen and the dressup center Santa just brought this year. Eventually we’d still love to do build ins or some updates to our fireplace wall in this space but it’s not a priority.

There’s a new TV hung on the wall with a new tv stand underneath as we moved our old entertainment unit to the basement. One section has a few DVDs but mostly this is closed hidden storage for the girl’s toys.

We invested in a nice big sectional couch that gives plenty of seating options for us to sit or lay as a family or if we have guests over. The wall color is the same and is something I hope to update this year.

UPDATE: Here it is 1.5 years later with a few more tweaks and updates!

Nehil Home Tour: the "before" photos - back office | spotofteadesigns.com

You can walk through the kitchen (which looks the same as the day we moved in and it probably will for some time) to get to my favorite room in the house: the office. The above is what it looked like when we moved in.

And here it is now! We paint this room Frost by Behr as I wanted a bright white that would not reflect any colors when shooting project tutorials. I work on this space EVERY SINGLE DAY. I originally thought it would be too small or what I would need but now I see that it’s the perfect size!

Nehil HOme Tour - 6 months after purchasing | spotofteadesigns.com

We invested in these tall kitchen cabinets from IKEA with pull out drawers for the perfect closed door solution. It might not look like it from this photo but these cabinets hold SO much! Now that I have the drawers all labeled with the Cricut vinyl, everyone can find what they need when crafting, not just me!

The one wall has our old fauxdenza from the old house which still holds all the scrapbooks and photobooks. The next space I want to update to make more functional is the desk area. I need a longer desk with some lower storage, but also some shelving above to get things off my desktop and allow more work space. I work in here EVERY day and LOVE the lighting I get from the big double windows!

Upstairs you’ll find the typical updates for bedrooms. New carpet, painted walls and minor decorations. And look! We actually have a guest room now WITH a bed! I have some ideas for this small space as it’s one of the brighter rooms in the house but currently seems so gloomy!

Nehil HOme Tour - 6 months after purchasing | spotofteadesigns.com

Our bedroom has been painted a nice blue and we hung up some curtains. Nothing too exciting but better than the bland color that was up before!

Brielle’s room got a purple wall makeover and is on the way to her rainbow bedroom dreams.

Hailey’s room is full of under the sea mermaid fun complete with the big girl bed she asked for from Santa! We’ve actually hung a few pieces of art from her nursery since I took this shot so an updated post showcasing her room is in the works!

2019 Plans:

  • New Shed – We have so much piled in our 2 car garage right now and I’d really like to get a car in there next winter!
  • New Roof – some of our gutters are not attached and are causing some leaking issues at the edge of the property so a new roof/gutter situation is probably needed
  • Landscaping – Derek already had a few trees removed from the property and we’d like to update the bushes and tree situation in the front of the house this spring.
  • Guest Room updates – I plan to paint and add some minimal decorations to this room to make it a more comfortable stay when my parents come over.
  • Office updates – New desk and shelving for that wall behind it.

🐚 Draw out a stencil of your preferred shape. It's optional to paint the shape itself, but even a rough pencil line will keep you on task
🐚 Use strong glue and a lot of it! I used E6000 glue and ended up having to get more than what you see here.
🐚 Flip the shells over! There are some cool colors on the insides that may match better than the top side.
🐚 Clean and dry the shells thoroughly. Sorry, but I have no tips about this process as my mom had these ones for year from past trips, but you don't want some smelly shells hanging in your home!
🐚 Don't skip on those little shells as those minis are perfect to fill in the gaps of the collages.

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
