How To Transfer A Design Onto A Pumpkin

in Celebrations, Crafts & DIY, Halloween / Fall, Home Decor

There’s still time to step up your Halloween decoration game! One easy way to do this is to paint a pumpkin! You don’t have to be an expert painter to make your pumpkin look good. If you have a design drawn out or something you want to copy, follow these steps and learn how to transfer a design onto a pumpkin!

Before going any further I must mention that I used these steps on a fake pumpkin! But honestly, go this approach so all your painting efforts will last from year to year. You can also follow these steps to transfer a design onto a canvas.

Ok let’s get started by gathering your supplies:

  • (fake) Pumpkin
  • Acrylic Paint (I love Americana Acrylics by Deco Art)
  • Assortment of paint brushes and paint palette
  • Pencil (I used a traditional one AND mechanical for this project)
  • Print out of your design
  • Scissors
  • Tape

First, print out your design on a piece of printer paper to fit the height of your pumpkin and cut out the general shape. For this project I’m using the logo from the brewery my family owns. I had the ability to print it in an outline format but you could just as easily do it with the design by a solid print.

Place your paper on a window and use the side of your pencil to rub over all the lines on your print . It will look like the above. Or just cover the whole sheet if that’s easier!

Place your design onto the flattest side of your pumpkin and tape in at least 2 spots. A pumpkin is obviously not a flat surface so this next step might be a little tricky.

Use your pencil (I actually switched it up to a mechanical pencil for this step) and trace over your design. If you lift the back of the design you’ll see that this will allow you to transfer a design onto your surface! It’s hard to tell here, but the design transferred onto the pumpkin! Continue tracing until complete then lift to see your design!

Next, use your paint and paintbrushes of choice to paint your design using your newly drawn pencil lines as a guide.

To complete this pumpkin I added a few plastic cockroaches with some hot glue because there’s never a better time to add fake bugs than Halloween!
