Guest Room | Side Table Makeover

Save on your furniture budget by making over something you already own! DIYing furniture doesn’t always mean cutting, building and assembling but could also mean an easy painting technique to completely transform the look and style. See how to easily update a guest room side table with the trendy farm cottage look with the help of some sand paper and chalk paint.

When looking for a new home, we wanted to, of course, have more space for our family to spread out and play, but also make sure we had a true guest room for my parents when they come down to visit. I’m happy that we were able to find a place that fit both those wishes but that also meant we needed to invest in some items to make it comfortable for our guests. We were lucky to reuse furniture and items already in our home and DIY some elements to update the guest room.

The room is a bit tight for a queen sized bed so we went with a full sized one Derek had at his dad’s home. You may recognize the bed spread from our master bedroom makeover from our last house. It’s really pretty and soft, but made us sleep too hot on a day to day basis so we’ve put this beauty up in the guest room space.

This side table was also from Derek’s childhood bedroom but was painted an ugly brown and didn’t fit the look I wanted.

I first gave it a good sanding to get rid of the old layer of paint and smooth any chipped spots.

I’ve come to love the distressed look I can create with Deco Art Chalky Finish paint when updating the front entry mirror in our old house, so tried out the Colonial color on this side table.  I layered two light coats of this chalky finish paint and let it dry thoroughly.  

To get the distressed look, I took a light grit sand paper to the edges on the table. It brought out some of the natural wood from the table.

To seal it, I applied two layers of the crème wax and buffed it slightly with a rag after drying.

Between the sanding, the paint and the creme wax, this little side table was completely transformed!

It now sits next to the bed and serves as a little space for a light and where guests can put any of their accessories before bed.

And since everyone loves a before and after photo….
