After 4.5 years of momming it, my bestie and I decided it was time for us to enjoy a long weekend on a girl’s trip – without the family! Long time SOTD readers will remember Allie as the awesome matron of honor who helped throw my bridal shower and later my baby shower, as well as, someone who has shared many of her home projects and DIY creations with my readers. Since both our kids were out of the infant stage and we luckily have supportive husbands to handle the kids back home, we packed our bags, hopped on a plane and enjoyed some bestie time away in warmer weather in historic Savannah!

We chose Savannah, Georgia as someplace East Coast friendly for a short flight and one that’s known for its southern belle type charm. It’s a great walking city so you can always put on your walking shoes and get to your destination within minutes. This trip marked my first time away from the girls, my first use of Uber to travel form the airport and one where I had my first praline! See what else we enjoyed:

Where we stayed in Savannah

  • Hampton Inn and Suites on East Bay street – Savannah is a walking town so I can’t really imagine a bad location to stay but I will say we were very happy with the one we chose! Our hotel was located near the River Walk area which made it a quick step across the street to walk by the water and in all the little shops. The room was plenty spacious for the two of us with a free continental breakfast and free wifi. The front desk will deny it but the rooms play up the haunted aspect of the city’s history with a bathroom mirror that made for a ghostly post shower look when it got foggy.

Where we ate in Savannah

  • Pirate’s House – This historic restaurant is on the outer edge of the city but still in walking distance to our hotel and most areas. It was a trolley stop on our tour so we hopped off to get some grub. I enjoyed a very filling burger and fries while Allie had and recommends the Crab Cake sandwich and a Kale slaw. If you bring kids ask for the pirate gear!
  • Fiddler’s Crab House – Despite the name and my love of crabs, I did not enjoy this dish at the Fiddler’s. We wanted to grab a relaxing lunch before hitting the airport on our last day and Fiddler’s offered just that! I enjoyed a Grilled Chicken Sandwich while Allie had a chowder and Fried Pickles, all on the upper deck of the restaurant with views of the water.
  • Leopold’s Ice Cream – On any blog or travel site about Savannah Leopold’s came up as a recommendation so we had to give in! Not only was it super creamy and yummy, it was pretty affordable as well! This was a nice treat to have post shopping and massages on Broughton street!
  • Wet Willie’s – This chain daiquiri bar can be found in many party towns in the US and Savannah as two of them. And while I don’t categorize Savannah as a party town, it is one you can walk and drink in! We enjoyed these delicious frozen drinks several nights with the Banana Berry, a strawberry and banana flavored drink, being my favorite!
  • Lizzy’s Tequila Bar & Grill – Sure, Savannah isn’t known for Mexican food, but who doesn’t love chicken fajitas and margaritas? That’s exactly what we enjoyed (plus Allie had the free Fried Green Tomatoes from the free coupon they offer when you walk in) our first night in the city.

  • The Olde Pink House – A MUST for the old school feel of this pretty city! We used Open Table to book a reservation and ate via a candlelight table for two in what the old banker’s office in this 18th century mansion. I enjoyed a hearty 8 oz filet mignon which came with twice baked potatoes and asparagus and Allie had the house special, the Crispy Scored Flounder with an Apricot Shallot Sauce.
  • Dockside Seafood – We were lucky enough to catch an open outdoor table here on River Street where we were able to enjoy our lunch in the fresh air while people watching those who walked by.

Things to do in Savannah

  • Old Trolley Tour – When visiting Chicago for Allie’s bachelorette trip years earlier, we had done a hop on hop off tour that was a great way to see the city, especially one that was so large. Savannah isn’t as big but this hop on hop off tour on our first full day in the city helped us get better acquainted with our surroundings and hear a bit of history. Tip: google for a coupon code before buying online as I found one for $4 giving me enough for an ice cream a later day. :)
  • Milan Day Spa – As two busy moms, we wanted to make sure to do some physical relaxation time and booked Swedish Massages at this pretty spa. It was a close walk from our hotel and near a shopping district on Broughton Street which were both win wins.
  • Shopping on Broughton Street – As just mentioned, we made time to get some shopping in on this trip at stores like LOFT, GAP and H&M. This was right down the street from the spa so we were able to do some shopping before getting our massages!

  • People watch on River Street – We found ourselves walking along River Street multiple times a day to weave in between the little shops, sample my first ever Praline, and to see the ENORMOUSNESS barges that passed by. We often grabbed some yummy daiquiri drinks from Wet Willies and parked ourselves on a bench to people watch the characters that came out to play.
  • Walk through City Market – We didn’t end up hitting this end of the city until the last day but there are lots of cute shops, many to do with art and jewelry, as well as, a few delicious looking restaurants! If you visit Savannah, I recommend hitting this area earlier than we did!
