Girls Like Construction Too: A Review of Diggerland USA

in Lifestyle, Travel

As a parent in New Jersey, I find it important to share local destinations and activities tailored towards kids, no matter what gender.  I had been eyeing Diggerland USA, a construction themed amusement park in West Berlin, NJ since it’s opening but was waiting for the right time and ages to attend with my two girls. We recently found that sweet spot of great weather and ages and got to explore this 21 acre park because girls like construction too!

That’s right! My girls do plenty of typically “girly” themed things but I don’t want to ever pigeon hole them in those situations, activities or toys. I’m perfectly happy to see them play with trucks or want to dig in the sandbox or kick around a soccer ball. While they don’t know the name of every construction vehicle (ok they call them all “construction truck”) they get just as excited as any boy when seeing something cool going down the road.

Diggerland USA is a construction themed amusement park where children and families can drive, ride and operate ACTUAL machinery.  Most rides allow a lap rider to enjoy their equipment at 36 inches and many let them ride alone at 42. Hailey and Brielle fit right within these marks so they both got to enjoy what the park has to offer.

Some rides were retrofitted pieces of machinery that were made to fit the theme, like this barrel train, while others were actual pieces of machinery they could ride or operate.

This spin Dig Around ride had us sitting in the buckets where you spun around forward and backwards which both girls liked.

Hailey was really able to steer this farm tractor as we drove it around the track!

Brielle really got to dig up the dirt and release the bucket to pour it out on these big diggers! (And Daddy had a fun time with it too!)

And when there were rides Hailey couldn’t ride, she got to explore this super tall playground with lots of slide tubes and was perfectly happy doing so!

My girls are not truck and construction equipment obsessed like some other kids are, but they love to go on rides and have fun. To all the girl moms out there, I encourage you to visit Diggerland USA and let your girls explore what they have to offer! Just a heads up, this fall they’re having Diggerfest, their version of a fall themed festival!

Things to Consider Before Your Visit:

  • Measure your kids. I would highly recommend waiting until your child is at least 36 inches or over so they aren’t limited on what they can do. They WILL check upon getting to the front of every line and no need to disappoint kids who are a few inches too short.
  • Wear proper footwear. While most of the rides and activities run over dirt, the pathways to them are paved and you rarely walk in the dirt itself! It’s a very clean park! I would still recommend sneakers for everyone attending!
  • Arrive early. We were there right when the park opened and got on plenty of rides before it started getting crowded. There were plenty of rides and activities that we rarely waited in a line and when we did it was pretty short.
  • Wear sunscreen. There is little shade at this park if you end up attending on a warm weather day, lather up or wear a hat!
  • Leave your snacks in the car. Outside food is not permitted in the park as they have a concession stand on site selling food. But you are also allowed to reenter the park with your wristband and the parking lot is pretty convenient to get in and out of. We took a break a little while in and went to have a snack and get recharged for more digging!
  • Look for ticket sales. If you’re planning to wait until next spring or summer to visit, make sure you sign up on their newsletter to get notice on their black Friday sale.  My mom had purchased these a few years back for my nephews and got a great deal! Experience gifts are always welcomed from grandparents!

5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this: 🐚 Draw ou 5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this:
🐚 Draw out a stencil of your preferred shape. It's optional to paint the shape itself, but even a rough pencil line will keep you on task
🐚 Use strong glue and a lot of it! I used E6000 glue and ended up having to get more than what you see here.
🐚 Flip the shells over! There are some cool colors on the insides that may match better than the top side.
🐚 Clean and dry the shells thoroughly. Sorry, but I have no tips about this process as my mom had these ones for year from past trips, but you don't want some smelly shells hanging in your home!
🐚 Don't skip on those little shells as those minis are perfect to fill in the gaps of the collages.

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
