Garage Makeover: Part I

in Basement and garage, Home Decor & Landscaping

Garage makeover | spotofteadesigns.com

We were very lucky when we found our house. It was built in 1960, but was completely gutted and redone by the previous owner so it looks very modern inside. We snagged it when it was only on the market for 30 days!

Garage before summer2011

The garage, however, was one space that was frozen in the original design without any updates.

Sure you could say “it’s a garage, who cares?” Well, we do!

  • Problem 1: Derek likes to be a handy man and landscaper on the weekends. This was his space to keep most of the tools and there was no organization system in place to hold them.
  • Problem 2: The garage was not insulated and is directly below our guest room turned baby girl’s room, so it was always a bit chilly.
  • Problem 3: I hate our kitchen fridge!!! It’s a side-by-side and doesn’t fit anything! I was eagerly wanting a second fridge for drinks and overflow food storage for parties.

This winter/spring/summer Derek decided to begin working on this space to better fit our needs.

Garage-electricandinsolutation

First, we had an electrician come in. There was only one rickety, old outlet on the ceiling and none around the outside, limiting our ability to charge a tool or plug in a fridge. He fixed that problem, adding several outlets around the perimeter and a second outlet in the ceiling.

Next, Derek got to work researching and purchasing insulation materials. He watched videos on YouTube and insulated the entire garage space, including the ceiling. Now it will be  nice and warm for baby girl!

Since the ceiling was a bit high and Derek was only one man, we hired a sheet rock guy who sheet rocked and taped the whole space with his crew. This was followed by Derek’s mad painting skills where he applied a coat of basic white paint.

To finish off the look, Derek painted the floor with a Valspar grey garage floor paint kit and a second coat with an epoxy seal.

Here’s just a quick shot of the floor so you can see those most important paint chips (oh and my swollen pregnant feet!)

Now you can see how Derek transformed this dingy 1960s garage into a bright, clean space!

Since the baby girl is on her way, we decided to pause our makeover so we can focus on prepping for her upcoming arrival, then get back to figuring out the organizing aspect of this garage system.

But for those wondering, yes I did get my fridge, just in time for my baby shower that was hosted at my house!
