First Time Dad Advice: Dos and Don’ts

in Lifestyle, Parenting

For the past few months, on Brielle’s monthly birthday, I’ve been sharing some advice and recommendations from my perspective as a first time mom (FTM). Today, I have a very special collaboration which features my hubby in honor of his first Father’s Day! Here are some points Super Dad Derek is passing along to other new dads or soon to be new dads!

First Time Dad Advice: Dos and Donts. #Dad #Parenting | spotofteadesigns.com
  • DO take the morning shift. While it is hard to get up really early, this is usually the most smiley and happy time for baby. It’s nice to soak up these happy times before a long day at work and better than the possibly grumpy/nap deprived baby you’ll come home to later.
  • DO take over bath time. At first it’s nice to have all their attention while you clean them since they don’t do very much, but later it’s fun to watch them splash around with their toys.
Top 10 favorite baby items for five months - 1 year: baby gates | spotofteadesigns.com
  • DO baby proof early. In our case, Brielle was crawling at 6 months and walking by 9 so babyproofing early, like adding this banister to banister gate, was a must! UPDATE: Here’s a post all about the babyproofing we did in our home!
  • DO get a routine. Be prepared for unexpected things, but for the most part, life goes easier when everyone has a little bit of a routine.
  • DO still continue hobbies. Sometimes dads need time away from the baby too.
  • DON’T make a lot of evening plans. This might seem contradictory to the last point, but you can make the occasional plans! Just know that it might be fun to be out late at the time, but baby still gets up at the same time no matter how late you were up the night before and you might have to pay the price!
  • DON’T miss out on things so DO find a work/home balance. When you leave work for the day, try to leave work at work. The baby is only this little once so enjoy it while you can. Do work at night when they’re sleeping if need be.
  • DO practice bottle feeding so it works when you need it. Brielle is still breastfed but the occasional bottle allows mom or both of us to be away for a few hours.
First Time Dad Advice: Sleep when the baby sleeps | spotofteadesigns.com
  • DON’T stay up late and DO sleep whenever you get an opportunity. That old advice “sleep when the baby sleeps” is very true when it comes to newborns!

This is a cute list! Although with twins if “Daaaa” takes the morning and bath time shifts, that’s a good chunk of time on top of his heavy workload at his job! I’ll pass this along to my hubby – I’m sure he’ll love it! Feel free to stop by my blog and say Hi! nikkieandbabies.blogspot.com

LATEST GRAMS

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
