DIY Zombies Group Halloween Costume

in Celebrations, Crafts & DIY, Halloween / Fall, Wearables

Create a ghoulish getup for your crew when creating this DIY Zombies Group Halloween Costume using Vinyl, a Cricut, Scissors and paint! This is a fun group costume for a softball team, teacher group or just best buds and you can even turn it into a crafting session where everyone can make their own Zombie look!

Welcome to yet another year of me and one of my besties and fellow crafty softball mom, Tara, making the team costumes for our daughters’ softball teams. In total we have 5 daughters between us and we help to make costumes for 3 of them!

Our goals for group Halloween costumes:

  • Same t-shirt base so they look like a team and can see who is who during play time. Yes, some costumes we see at tournaments are so cute when everyone is something different but we feel it doesn’t give the best chance of success for game time!
  • Easy to duplicate for the masses. We prefer to do anything with vinyl so we make sure there aren’t to many colors of vinyl to purchase and buy the larger color needs as a bulk role.
  • No costume component that interferes with the player’s ability to play. When they were 8u and coaches pitched, their Dalmatian costumes included a tutu but once they got older, we omitted any of that type of accessory since the players themselves couldn’t pitch in that get up.
  • Occasional photo prop is ok! For the Gatorade costumes, they had a Gatorade bottle with their number that was personalized for the tournament that they held in photos. For my other daughter’s prison inmate costumes, they had a black hat accessory that completed the costume but wasn’t worn for game play.

DIY Zombies Group Halloween Costume Supplies:

  • White T-shirt
  • Cricut Maker
  • Cricut Basic Weeding Tools
  • Cricut EasyPress Heat Press
  • Black Heat Transfer Vinyl – purchase this bulk roll that is cold peel, FYI
  • Fabric scissors
  • Foam Sponge Brushes
  • Fabric or acrylic paint
  • Snazaroo Face Paint Set

Cut and apply your team logo onto the front of your shirt and their numbers on the back. I downloaded the font Shlop from Dafont.com to create this drippy Zombie logo look. I also made sure to move the letters individually to make it a little more funky.

Next, use fabric scissors to cut a small slip along the sleeve hem and rip to remove it from the shirt. Repeat for the other sleeve and the bottom hem.

Next, use fabric scissors to cut little slits in several spots on the shirt then rip with your fingers to make a larger more natural hole. I’ve also heard you can use a cheese grater or sandpaper to create more rough effects to the shirt base.

Next pour some paint onto a paper plate and use a foam brush to make a mix of red, black, and brown paint using a dry brush technique. We started with the red fabric paint I ordered but then thought it needed some mixes of brown and black so we used acrylic paint too. Rub the paint along the holes and loosely around it. This is all random and every shirt will look different!

We actually only did the coach shirts, but set up a crafting station before a practice one day where the girls got to make their own shirts!

We taught them how to make the cuts to remove the hems, do the rips and add the paint.

There were so many interpretations of these instructions. Some wanted more rips. Some wanted less mess. Some got really in there and were all bloody.

I think that’s a great representation of what you see in Zombie movies and they all look awesome next to one another!

To complete the Zombies costume look on game day, each player wore black pants, red socks and a white belt.

After the 8am game, we had a break and set up a face paint area where we added some white/gray faces black around the eyes and some hints of red blood on different areas of their face. I used this my Snazaroo face paint kit, still good 3 years later when I did the girls’ cheetah costumes!

We also sprayed some white/grey spray in their hair to age them up a bit more.

Make sure to make time for the happy, smiling team photos, but also the sulking zombie style shots when wearing this Zombie Group Costume!

I’d love to see your version of this group craft so please tag me if you try it out!
