My black, white and gold wedding invitations

Since the invitation is the first introduction to a wedding, I thought I’d start off the wedding posts from our big day with my partially DIY invitation!

A little background: I went to school for graphic design and have always been a paper crafter, making all my cards for holidays and occasions. When it came to choosing invitations for my wedding, it was a big deal to step away from the design aspect of the invite.

However, I found a happy medium when I chose the lacy elegance design from (the no longer active) WeddingPaperDivas.com. Their site is great as they allow for custom color changes and, of course, copy editing. I even used a gold color that isn’t available normally on WPD but instead of their sister site TinyPrints.com (which I only learned through their AWESOME customer service on the chat program.)

While I allowed myself to give up on the design and printed aspect, I still snuck in some crafty aspects to finish off the set.  The outer envelope included a custom printed wrap around address label. To do this, I printed the address labels on Avery full sheet shipping labels and use a craft knife to cut them apart. I fit 6 labels per full size sheet.

Inside, guests were introduced to our wedding with a “You’re Invited” tag (made with this EK Tools Punch) and black/white baker’s twine (purchased at Divine Twine) around a metallic black paper wrap.

The main invitation was matted on gold metallic paper to give it a little structure, while the other elements were color coordinated.

We went with the modern seating note, providing each invitation with the number of seats their party was allowed. I had seen the copy of “Guest attending” or “Guest Celebrating From Afar” listed to change up the traditional “declining” negative word usage.

And yes, for those zooming in, the example invite is addressed to the president! I read on this blog, if you send an invite to the president, you get a congratulations letter from the White House. Regardless of your political views, I think anyone would think it’s pretty cool if you get something from the White House, right?

A word to the wise if you are following this look. Pay attention to the weight used for the matting and for the wrap. As there was a thicker piece in the center of the invite, it caused for a different postage needed and I ended up having to use 2 forever stamps on the outside per envelope. It didn’t matter to me, as I saved so much with a great coupon code from Wedding Paper Divas, but I’m sure it could throw a wrench in other people’s invitation budget.
