Watermelon Birthday Party | Decorations, Desserts and Activities

in Birthday, Celebrations

Last summer we threw a backyard, summer fun filled day to celebrate my birthday twins. It was a watermelon birthday party filled with lots of red, pink, and green desserts, decorations and activities! I chose the watermelon theme since they share their birthday and sharing a birthday is sweet! Now that the summer weather is returning, I’m back to share the full recap of this fun watermelon birthday party day!

Invitations:

Since sharing a birthday is sweet, we went with the watermelon theme that started with the invitations. A fun photoshoot complete with a large slice of watermelon and cute watermelon bathing suits welcomed family and friends to the big day.

Dessert Table:

Ahh the dessert table. I didn’t do many decorations elsewhere and made this the focus on my watermelon color scheme.

I like to include a mix of textures and flavors so everyone can find something to enjoy.

Rice Krispies Treats are always a hit and all but 2 pieces were left on this watermelon looking platter by the end of the party!

My layered green and red jello didn’t turn out as planned so I’ll have to read up more on getting that to work. Regardless, it was Brielle’s favorite dessert, oddly enough!

In lieu of cake, I like to do cupcakes because really, no one wants to eat my kids’ spit. :)

I made these fun watermelon cone cupcakes that I topped on regular sized cupcakes for guests and on a mini cake for each of my girls.

And no, while Hailey tried, I didn’t let them eat the whole thing! The party hats were originally just red but I used a Sharpie and green washi tape to transform them into watermelon designs!

The watermelon paper napkin backdrop was an easy and cheap DIY backdrop for the dessert table display and the watermelon canvases I painted earlier this summer helped to reinforce that watermelon theme!

Activities:

With all the kids attending under the age of 6, I knew I didn’t need a lot of activities to keep them entertained.

We filled the backyard with water toys and backyard games and just let them play as much as possible.

This sprinkler has always been a hit in our house!

Brielle enjoyed her first glimpse into the fun of slime when attending my “Take Your Kid To Work Day” back in April so I made note of the kit we used and got some for the party. The kit makes 3 different colors of slime and you are supposed to use the container itself for mixing. Since I was splitting it up among the kids, I went to the dollar store and got each kid a plastic container and a wood craft stick to mix.

The directions for these slime kits are super easy and it allowed them all to try out this slime craze in this outdoor setting. Everyone had fun and got to take their slime home in the containers!

Favors:

About a month before the party the the girls helped me create party favor tags from paper plates.

I attached their handmade tags to Shrinky Dinks Shimmer and Shine and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle kits for the kids. I know everyone will have fun with these once home!

Overall, I KNOW the girls had a blast at their watermelon birthday party and as a bonus they were stoked to learn you actually get presents on your birthday!

Their birthday is about 2 months away so you better believe this year’s theme is already in the works!

5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this: 🐚 Draw ou 5 Tips to Make Shell Canvases like this:
🐚 Draw out a stencil of your preferred shape. It's optional to paint the shape itself, but even a rough pencil line will keep you on task
🐚 Use strong glue and a lot of it! I used E6000 glue and ended up having to get more than what you see here.
🐚 Flip the shells over! There are some cool colors on the insides that may match better than the top side.
🐚 Clean and dry the shells thoroughly. Sorry, but I have no tips about this process as my mom had these ones for year from past trips, but you don't want some smelly shells hanging in your home!
🐚 Don't skip on those little shells as those minis are perfect to fill in the gaps of the collages.

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
