Yesterday marked the unofficial start of summer so it’s time to start thinking of new ways to enjoy your favorite treats. This summer, consider a waffle bowl!
If your toddler is anything like mine they are very distracted when it comes to eating. This is especially true for those cold summer treats. I’m torn, as I want her to be able to enjoy the occasional summer treat, but do not enjoy the whining that happens because her fingers are sticky and the time I spend doing laundry afterwards. She’s just not good with things on sticks! To lessen these situations, I have come up with a fun way to give her these special treats — with a waffle bowl!
While we tend to always have fresh fruit on hand in our house, I’m the first to admit that we don’t always have a plethora of veggies in our fridge. I’m always looking for ways to sneak some veggies in, both for the girls and us as adults. This is why I was very intrigued to try Outshine® Fruit and Veggie Bars, as they’re made with real fruit and veggies.
The company has been around for over 20 years, already including delicious fruits into their bars so I was betting they would make veggies taste good too. Brielle is a big fan of yogurt so I went ahead and also picked up the strawberry flavored Simply Yogurt Bars too.
These and other Outshine® bar flavors are available at Walmart in the freezer section. (Side note: they also have Coconut Waters™ treats for those that enjoy that flavor!)
When it came time to make our waffle bowl treat we only need to really do one step — chop!
Break out your cutting board and get to work chopping up the bars into smaller pieces. I mixed and matched a yogurt and 2 Fruit and Veggie bars for a flavorful mix.
Chop and include an assortment of fruit. Lately Brielle is really into blueberries and strawberries (do you think she knows it’s the patriotic season?) so they were a must for this waffle bowl combo. Once the bars and cut fruit are in the bowls, it’s time to grab a spoon and you’re ready to enjoy!
Derek, Brielle and I each enjoyed a bowl this weekend. Derek like the yogurt bar best and ate his bowl the fastest. Brielle took her time eating all bites and I was a big fan of the tangerine medley. You can actually taste the fruit flavor in each bar! We are still laughing over Brielle’s reaction to Derek eating his bowl after finishing all the insides. I guess she had never seen a waffle bowl before and she kept saying “Daddy you eat the sides?”
As the company says “find yourself an Outshine® Bar, and shine on!” That was a genuine shining face for this “special treat” and I had an excited face as the nutrition label included all things I could actually pronounce!
Here’s a recap of our super simple recipe you can create at home! To make the 3 bowls we shared, we used:
- Frozen bars (2 Outshine® Fruit & Veggie Bars and 1 Simply Yogurt Bar)
- Fresh fruit (3 strawberries and a handful of blueberries)
- 3 Waffle bowls
- 3 spoons
Step 1: Chop up frozen bars.
Step 2: Chop up fruit.
Step 3: Mix ingredients and insert Spoon. Tip: Place the waffle bowl on a small plate for a spot to rest the spoon or keep the mess to a minimum when you get to biting the bowl!
