Mother’s day is quickly approaching so it’s time to consider what to give to mom or grandma! You’ve already given her the enlarged family portrait so you’ll need a new way to capture that moment in time. This year, consider including family members in a unique way and gift her a digital silhouette portrait!

I’m always trying to think of something new and handmade for my mom for Mother’s Day.
Before kids it was usually something wearable (like this bird’s nest necklace or this wood bead necklace) or something that featured photos (like this unique photobook idea or this scrapbooked frame).
Once kids came around, I made sure they were somehow included in the creative gifting process, starting with Brielle’s handmade cards and most recently the grandkids painted garden sculptures.
As the kids just painted her handmade ornaments for Christmas, I decided to go another approach and wanted to create a silhouette portrait gift.
This is a timeless craft that goes back centuries and while is typically done with paper, I went the digital route to capture this slice of time. To create this silhouette gift, I first captured photos of each grandchild by having them stand against a solid wall and snapped a side profile shot (or 6 as the case may be when photographing kids)!
Then I was able to use Adobe Illustrator and my graphic design roots to digitally trace their silhouettes and put together a composite image featuring all 5 of their little profiles.
I gifted this item early to my mom and everyone agreed each silhouette looks exactly like that child!
This little slice of time will now live on my mom’s wall for years to come and we’ll be able to see how much each child has changed, even by their simple silhouette!
