This year my mom celebrated a milestone birthday and since many of her 5 grandkids enjoyed arts and crafts, I designed a fun activity for her 5 grandkids to complete.
First, grab these free printable to complete this activity. A portrait frame should be handed out to artist along with a pencil and maybe something to lean on, if not at a table. If desired, feel free to give them coloring materials as well!
Designate a chair or chairs for the model(s) to sit in which is viewable by all artists and choose an amount of time to draw. We had my my mom sit where all the kids could see and set our favorite timer to 5 minutes.
Turns out 5 minutes wasn’t enough for a quick portrait and we kept adding. It ended up being closer to 10 minutes. But if you want to have time for coloring, I’d extend it even further. No matter what time allotment you give, each artist should then try their best and capture the model’s likeness on the portrait drawing frame.
After the timer went off, we hung each of the portrait drawing entries on a wall using painter’s tape like it’s an art gallery.
My mom then sorted through the printed awards and applied one to each portrait. The awards include a variety of positive options that lean on different skills including most realistic, etc. Surely there is something positive to say about each piece of art! You can get the free printable awards file by clicking on the image below.
In the end, it was adorable to see each way the child viewed their Grammie and obviously something we’ll photograph and remember in the years ahead!
This would make a great activity for students to draw of their teacher, players to draw of their coach, kids can draw their grandma for Mother’s Day or any group to explore the wonderful skill of portrait drawing!
