Friends you are in for a treat today! My good friend Carrie ( yeah the one who I asked for registry advice and who generously gave us all her daughter’s outgrown wardrobe that both my girls have rocked) is here today to share some of her son’s favorite books! As this blog heavily leans on girl themed content since I’m a #girlmom I welcome more awesome content for boys! And honestly, as she stresses, these books can pertain to both genders so check them out!

Hello! My name is Carrie and I am a Mommy to 2 amazing kids, ages 6 and 3.5. I am also a book addict and love seeing books bring joy to my kids. I have compiled just a few of my son’s favorites, from baby through age 6 in hopes to help those looking for educational and inspiring books for the little boys in your life!
Board Books:
- Bright Baby Touch & Feel Numbers and Bright Baby Touch & Feel Words – Ryan was gifted these wonderful books and as you can see, they are VERY well loved – aka they hold up! The bright colors and textures on each page kept him reading over and over. I kept them in my purse as they were great on the go and for him to “read” in the car.
- Bryon Barton Series – Trucks, Planes, Trains – These are just the best books for boys – and girls! They are fun to look at and great for toddlers and even older kids. I remember having the Planes one as a kid and it was fun seeing it again on our bookshelf.
- Leslie Patricelli Books – Ok, these are the smartest books – they are funny and kids LOVE them! We started with Yummy Yucky and it really did help teach my toddler what not to eat! They are truly universal for both boys or girls. Check out Potty, Huggy Kissy and No No Yes Yes also!
- Very First Words (Usborne First Words Board Books)- Oh Usborne books – we are huge fans in this house! This particular book has been so wonderful at teaching both of my kids everyday objects in a cute way.
Classic Series:
- The Going-To-Bed Book – This has been a favorite in our house as Sandra Boynton is such a classic! The illustrations are adorable with the memorable characters appearing in many books. Cute idea: we were gifted this from a sweet co-worker who gave us all her kids’ favorite books. Take note of your kids favorites and gift them to friends!
- Berenstain Bears – These are the types of books he is LOVING at 6, now that he can read. He can’t get enough of these! Shown above: The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room.
Potty Humor:
- Toot – As mentioned earlier, we are big fans of Leslie Patricelli books but this is our favorite! Kids and adults (especially DADS) can’t stop cracking up over this book!
- The Underpants Zoo – My uncle gifted this book and oh my goodness, do we laugh. This is a fantastic story and really funny.
Great Books for First Birthday Gifts:
- Little Pea – I think this is the most read book in our collection! It’s super cute, clever and fun to read. The basis of the story is that when you are a pea, you have to eat candy, for every meal. But little pea doesn’t like candy, he wants SPINACH instead. It teaches a great message and there is counting, days of the week, and colors.
- Little Gorilla – Little gorilla was born and everybody loved him! He gets bigger and bigger and bigger, turns 1, everyone sings happy birthday to him and everyone still loves him! It’s a great first birthday gift! I received one for my first birthday and my Mom gave one to my son for his!
Educational:
- National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Space – Ryan loves space and this book is beautiful and educational!
- NO Trespassing – This Is MY Body! – Excellent book about teaching kids about their body!
- SuperHero ABC– We tried everything to get Ryan interested in learning his letters and sounds. Nothing was working. He just didn’t care…until we got this book. I found it on Amazon and it had so many glowing reviews. Ryan loves superheros so this was a hit!
- Froggy Gets Dressed– So clever and funny! Teaches about getting dressed in this one but there are more books featuring this character.
More Favorites:
- Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot – This is Ryan’s first “chapter book” since learning how to read. His friend at school was reading them and loves the series. When you get towards the end of the book, you flip the pages back and forth to make the pages animate the battle. Really unique.
- Stuck – As you can probably tell so far, our family really loves funny books. I’d have to say, hands down, this is my favorite kids book (close tie with Little Gorilla). Oliver Jeffers is amazing. Smart, witty, funny. He makes it all come together in the best ways. He also illustrated The Day the Crayons Quit (another favorite for this art family). If you are sick of reading the same old books, you won’t mind reading this one over and over. The funnier and more dramatic you read it, the more laughs you will get. I gift this to friends and family a lot.
- Lego Ninjago Masters Of Spinjitzu Book: It All Begins Here – Ryan’s current obsession! There are a ton of these books and I love that they compliment his Lego sets and almost helps them come alive in these stories. I love that he reaches for this every night before bed. He learned to read this year in Kindergarten from not having any interest when school started. We are so proud of our reader!
- Little Blue Truck Leads the Way – As Ryan grew, so did his attention span. My uncle is a HUGE book lover and he really puts a lot of thought into the books for the kids. This was a huge hit right off the bat. Boys love their trucks and this truck is a great little truck.
Personal Touch:
- Personal Photo books – And last but not least, I want to recommend making your kids their own books! These books a treasures to Ryan and can’t be found on Amazon. We moved about 6 hours away when Ryan was 3.5 years old and he left behind a best, best friend. I took all of the photos of the two of them together and made photo books, one for each year they have been apart. Now the photos are visits with each other, but I always catch these books on Ryan’s bed. He misses Ethan so much and this is a great way to keep their friendship memories of each other alive.
