DIY Mermaid Halloween Costume | Starfish Hair Clip

in Celebrations, Crafts & DIY, Fabric Crafts, Halloween / Fall, Printables, Wearables

When it comes to mermaids, there are no better accessories than starfish, shells or dingle hoppers for their hair! Consider crafting one of these up for the wanna be mermaid in your life. See how to create a starfish hair clip to go along with your DIY mermaid costume, using the free printable template and following the step by step photos.

As previously shared, my girls threw out the mermaids idea for this year’s Halloween costume and I was not mad at it! I decided to go the more comforable approach and painted scales on cotton pants, added iron on shells to a cotton top and made fluffy mermaid fins from tulle. See all the details on their DIY mermaid costumes here.

To top it all off, I used felt and dimensional paint to create these quick and easy starfish hair clips to hold back their colorful wigs or natural hair, if they decide to go that route on Halloween night.

Supplies:

  • Felt
  • Tulle
  • Needle and thread
  • Hair clip
  • Mermaid Starfish Hair Clip template
  • Scissors (these are my favorite for cutting felt)
  • Dimensional Fabric Paint (anyone remember Puffy Paint?)

First cut out the template then cut out the coordinating shapes from felt. I actually created both a pink and a purple one for both girls. Make sure to cut the slits on the back of the starfish, as shown on the template, where the hair clip will fit later.

Ok for this step I’m going to tell you what I did, but I’m going to make a better suggestion on what I WISH I did. I added a little tulle ruffle on the back of my starfish clips but not until the end. If I made these again, I’d do them at this step and sew the tulle in between the felt layers.

Use straight pins to attach the front and backs together. Sew together.

On the front, add dots on the front of the starfish hair clip using dimensional paint.

Here’s where you see that I added that fluff of tulle to the bottom of the felt clip after the dimensional paint was dry.

I guess it ultimately doesn’t matter as the ugly hot glue look is on the back, but learn some my mistakes people and sandwich it into the felt at the earlier step!

These mermaids are going to be so excited come October 31st, especially with this felt starfish hair clip attached!
