We don’t have a true “mud room” area where we can dump all our shoes, coats, sunglasses, keys and all those miscellaneous objects you can to drop off when you enter the door. Now that we have a fun new entry way space with my bright colorful mirror I wanted to try and create a little space for some of those little dodads we always have in our hands that we need to drop upon entry.

I decided to craft up a little tray that would match my new frame and broke out my Deco Art Americana Home Décor Chalky Finish Paint.

I picked up this plain wood tray at Michaels and applied a quick white base coat. As you can see, I did miss a few spots but I didn’t care since this would be covered and part of a distressed look later. I LOVE how well the Americana Acrylic paint covers wood surfaces! It’s the same paint we used for Allie’s DIY Alphabet Blocks we made at her baby shower!

Next I applied one coat of the Chalky Finish paint named Treasure, the same one I used on my mirror.  Love this color!

After allowing it to dry, I scratched it all up with a nice distressed look using a bit of sand paper. TIP: Lay an old rag or towel underneath as you do this step as it will get messy!

The final step (which I forgot to photograph) was to apply the clear wax on top and buffer it to a light glossy finish. You can see my little assistant checking out my handiwork, or more likely starting into the eyes of my fun wood crate snowman that is now part of my holiday entry way décor!

I love how it goes with my new blue themed décor and is the perfect size for a few pairs of sunglasses, keys or whatever else we have to drop off from our hands.

Oh and here’s a sneak peek to my holiday décor hanging up at the house! You can even see my felt stocking advent calendar hung along the railing in the living room. :)

LATEST GRAMS

Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some r Hello fellow readers! If you're looking for some recommendations for historical fiction reads, here are 5 of my favorites I enjoyed last year that I'd recommend to readers who like this genre (with no spoilers):
.
The Frozen River by Arial Lawhorn – Takes place in the post American Revolution times, narrated by a midwife sharing her challenges in this profession and not being taken seriously but still having people trust her medical authority. It includes a murder and trial, which just reiterates how crazy it was to be a woman back then and their lack of rights!
.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel – Like many of her books, this author focuses on the French aspect of WWII, but this time as those who helped forge documents to help Jewish children cross the border.
.
The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Miessner – Follow Susan Whalen who comes to San Francisco in 1906 as a mail order bride only to get into the middle of a complicated life after marrying a man she never met and things she discovers during a nature disaster in her state.
.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali – Starts in the 1950s in Iran where we meet two friends and follow their story through the historic time of this country. This fictional read shares more about the culture and limitations of women and those who try to change the government while struggling to maintain friendships.
.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn – An assortment of female friendships during WWII as they work to break secret codes by the German military and continues to follow their stories through the years.
.
If you have a suggestion on another in this genre, please leave it in the comments so I can add to my TBR!
