in Celebrations, Christmas, Crafts & DIY, Fabric Crafts, Printables

Gingerbread houses are so fun to craft in the holiday season, but have such a short life to admire the hard work. Consider extending the time you can enjoy these beautiful creations and craft up some mixed media plush gingerbread ornaments to last the full season through!

Do you remember earlier this summer when my friends at Fairfield World sent me a big bag of their Poly-Fil filling that I used for a fun bookworm pillow for my daughter?

Well I still have plenty left of this 2 pound bag and I’ve been itching to make use of more of this fluffy filling! I decided the Christmas crafting season was the perfect time so get ready for not one but two ideas in the next few weeks to make great use of this fiber fill for the holidays!

Plush Gingerbread House Ornament Supplies

  • Felt – At the minimum you’ll need brown and white but lots of other colors can be used for decorative elements
  • Poly-Fil® Premium Fiber Fill 32 ounce Bag
  • Gingerbread House Ornament Template
  • Embroidery Thread and Needle
  • Misc mixed media materials (beads, pipe cleaners, buttons, metal frames)
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors (these are my favorite for cutting felt!)

Gingerbread house crafts are so fun because they all start with the same base, but can turn out completely different depending on who the artist is and what they have on hand. To start, go ahead and cut out the gingerbread house pieces from the template and cut coordinating pieces of felt for these shapes.

Now it’s time to go hunting in your crafting supplies, sewing basket, household knick knacks or hardware drawers to pull out materials to decorate your gingerbread houses.

Sew all components onto the top layer of your plush gingerbread house. Consider adding beads, buttons painted to look like peppermints, pipe cleaners or metal frames.

Next, sew the front and back pieces together using a blanket stitch around the edges, making sure to sew the ribbon hanger at the top and leave an opening to push some Poly-Fil stuffing inside.

If you don’t have the pieces you need, you can also DIY theme! The peppermint looking buttons on the roofline of this house are just white buttons painted with red paint pens.

Or, use sewing techniques to create your own patterns and textures, like creating candy cane stripes doors around red pipe cleaners or window panes on yellow felt.

Add these plush gingerbread house ornaments as gift tags on holiday gifts or add them to your tree!

Our group of 2 adults and 5 kids were hosted by TreeTopQuestPhilly and enjoyed a sunny Saturday exploring obstacles, climbing and ziplining and we'd highly recommend this park!
.
Here some key details to know before you go:
- The staff is super knowledgable, friendly and patient with climbers of all abilities, but it is self paced where you are in control of your own equipment.
- You attend an equipment fitting, safety instruction and practice course before you climb
- Expect to spend the full 2.5 hours of your reservation and you likely won't need sunglasses in this shady spot
- Gloves are an optional purchase, but we didn't get them and no one got any blisters
- There are 4 levels of courses with Level 4 being for those 12+ only. It's HIGH but thrilling to those willing to check it out!
- Porta potties and lockers are available at the check in area and there are plenty of benches and picnic tables to sit at in the park. Spectators are free to watch from below.
