I can’t believe it, but today is my little nephew (my godson)’s first birthday! We’ll be celebrating this weekend with a jungle animal themed birthday party, which I hope to share soon.

But, do you remember this post about the jungle animal paintings I made for Christmas for his room?

At my last visit to their house, I snapped a shot of them hung in his room. While you can’t see that his bedding, curtains and wall hanging all match this theme from this photo, trust me that they do!

Happy Birthday buddy!!!

Today, I’m headed out to my nephew’s Christening (baptism? is there a difference?) where I will be named his godmother. Here’s the simple card I made for the occasion!

Welcome Little One

Last December, my sister bought a house…while 4 months pregnant. They redid a lot of the interior work to make it their home and 5 months later, my little nephew Blake was born. They set up a cute little nursery for him with a jungle animal theme. You know, the matching crib blankets, wall tapestry, hanging diaper bag, etc.

But when babysitting in September, I still felt the walls were a little vacant for this fun little guy. Though I realize this gift is more for my sister than for him, for Christmas I painted 3 square panels of some of the characters for her to hang as extra wall decor in his jungle themed nursery. I went to Michaels with my coupon (and finance D, who was also manned with a coupon) and bought the canvas bases for my paintings. Here’s what I did!

First, I drew out the designs slightly with a pencil. Tip: if you’re using something as inspiration, as I was, take a photo of this piece and print it out. Use a ruler to draw a grid over the picture. Use that grid to help you keep your drawing porportionate as you transpose it onto the canvas.

Next, I bought paints in the colors needed. I bought a few of the basics then also grabbed a white and black to mix. I recommend getting a small plastic paint palette that you can mix on. This one has seen a lot of loving over the years, but easily washes off for more painting adventures!

Because his walls were yellow and the base behind each animal was also a light yellow, I decided to define my borders with a little bit of dashed line effect (which is also used in the original tapestry).

Voila! Three new jungle themed painting that match her existing decor to hang in his room.

Handmade Christmas Gift #1 – Use your Stash: Handmade Cards

As you have seen on my blog, I have a Cafepress Store! In all honesty, I don’t pay as much attention to the store as I’d  like, except when I added new designs to help complete #8 from my 30 Before Thirty list last year. I treat it as a hobby store on the side that is mostly made of inside jokes or suggestions from family/friends.

While I’ve had this store for 5 years, it still makes me smile when I open my email to see a message that some random person I never met liked my design enough to purchase it for themself or a friend. For that, I thank you Cafepress Shoppers!

Thank you for my 2011 sales, which increased by 42% over the previous year! These earnings help to fuel my creative efforts, including last year’s excellent purchase of a new camera.

In honor of this great selling year, I put together a little list of some of the top selling designs!

Top Selling Baby Themed Design

There must’ve been a lot of cute little boys being born this year!

Top Selling Regional Design

New Jersey

I think the explosion of Jersey Shore, Real Housewives of New Jersey or Jerseylicious type shows that continued to be a hit in 2011, helped make this otherwise niche-y Jersey Girl At Heart design my third best seller!

Top Selling Holiday Season Design

I don’t even know how many times I watched Elf this Holiday Season, but I must not have been the only one enjoying the Will Ferrell flick!

Overall Top Selling Design

I guess all the ballerinas, cheerleaders, crafters, princesses and girly girls were looking for a glitzy design to wear this year!

pinwheels cards for birthday and baby

Here’s a fun little embellishment you can make yourself, a pinwheel!

Take 1 square piece of paper (I used a 2 x 2 inch square for mine). A double sided paper is best so if you don’t have a print you like, make your own. I used this polka dot background stamp from HeroArts and stamped both sides in two different colors.

supplies to make a pinwheel

1. Cut slits in all four corners of the square paper.

2. Fold part of each of the slits into the center to form the pinwheel look.

3. Overlap these triangle pieces if needed and hold together with a brad in the center.

Put on the front of cards for birthdays or kids themes like this ‘welcome baby’ design. It’s a cute card and a great way to use up scraps.

Ga Ga for Garlands!

Couplrophia , from Dictionary.com, is an abnormal fear of clowns. I have this. I have always hated these characters!

When I was a kid my dad used to think it was funny to bring me closer and closer to these costumed characters at parades where I’d be a prisioner in my stroller with no where to go! Later in middle school I’d hear about all those movies where is a killer clown, like Stephen King’s IT, or see posters for the weird Insane Clown Posse music group which just reinstilled my issues! They are not always the funny looking personalities they pretend to portray and quite frankly I found most of them pretty scary!

This is where my Anti Clowns design came from with just a basic sketch of a clown design with the red “anti” or “no” red ring through it. I put it on adult and children tshirts alike, since clowns can be scary at any age!

As you have read, my nephew is here! He’s officially now the youngest male member of his family and therefore carrying on the family name.

Originally made for my cousin Liam, who really is carrying on the family name for my mom’s side, it is a design which can be worn by any of the sons in your family!

In college I had made this little chick face guy. Later, I added this “chick magnet” title and boom now it’s a good seller in my Cafepress Store! I happen to also like that they offer it as a dog t-shirt as a cute puppy can also be a chick magnet!

If a little male in your life is good with the ladies, then this chick magnet design is perfect for him!

I officially have something else fun to blog about! My sister gave birth to my first newphew, little Blake, Tuesday!! Another fun person to craft for!

(photo taken at a Maternity photo shoot I did at 37 weeks)

I’m at the age where all my friends are either getting married or having babies. And with both occassions, thank you cards are at the ready to send.

Since I’m a cardmaker for myself, I thought I’d share the wealth and I started making Thank You Card and Stationery sets for family and friends for all these showers. They have always been well received by both the mom to be/bride to be at the shower and all the other attendees. Note to all: Thank you cards and stationery sets are always a great gift idea!

Baby Shower Thank yous (made for my Aunt M)

A colorful stationery set for my friend A (sorry for the blurriness)

Another floral stationery set

If you were to give a set like this to a friend, I would higly recommend buying a package of these acrylic bloxes so that you can properly gift them the set!

Welcome!
